I decided to document my UDS build here...

I knew someone was going to rub it in. I figure a happy wife is a happy life....although some of the cost is due to the fact that I don't have access to spare parts, expanded metal, etc. I found it is just cheaper to bite the bullet rather than spend $30-40 on gas to find all of the components...

I decided to document my UDS build here...

Hello all, I have most of my components so far. I need to take pictures and itemize everything so far. I am an open book, so that means I will list the absurd prices that I paid. I have a thick skin....and a wife who has certain demands about what type of components will be used. She is...

Just introduced myself in the roll call section....

I am really surprised how "beefy" this thing is. Weighs alot more than I expected and fit and finish is way better than I imagined. I guess it can be calibrated too as there is a screw on the back. Just need to get it installed on the the new drum.

UDS Poll - How many of you tossed the rubber seal?

A tight seal was a concern of mine. I will toss the rubber seal and worry no more. It seems like I am putting way too much thought on this.

UDS Poll - How many of you tossed the rubber seal?

I am curious to see how many of you are using the rubber seal that cam with the lid on your barrel. It is listed as a EPDM rubber seal. When I looked up EPDM on the internet, it mentions ethyl something, but I am no chemist. Your thoughts?

Just introduced myself in the roll call section....

It takes four business days for the barrels to arrive. You could have it shuipped to Grainger and pick it up on the way back. There are several barrels to choose from. http://www.grainger.com/Grainger/wwg...um&L1=Drums%2C I chose this one: http://www.grainger.com/Grainger/items/4GY29

I did a look up and found this: Branch: 064 221 Moore Lane Billings, MT 59101-3418 Phone: (406) 252-6311 Fax: (406) 252-0207 If that does not work, you can always go to ebay and buy a new barrel for around the same price. See link below: http://cgi.ebay.com/Barrels-New-55-G...hippingPayment

Just introduced myself in the roll call section....

This barrel is much better than the first. I had difficulty getting the lid off due to a vacuum seal. I had to break the seal with a screw driver. The lid popped off to reveal a bright and shiny metal surface. I am waiting for Grainger to pick up the damaged barrel and get the charge off of the...

    Kingsford on Sale

I just bought four bags of Cowboy lump by mistake. (I should have bought the kingsford, but the tags were not placed properly.) When I left the register I checked my reciept and, I told the clerk that I thought that the Cowboy lump was on sale because the yellow tag was above the Cowboy Lump...

    UDS Math Grate Location

I must have read the 87 page thread at the bbq-breatheren 3 times already. Funny thing is that I keep on forgetting to take notes as I go along. I will most likely stay with one cooking grate. If I need more capacity, then I will have to make another drum smoker. I just need to get that barrel...

It looks like I will stick to one food rack 7 inches below the barrel. Once again, you all have been a wonderful resource.

    UDS Math Grate Location

Have any of you done a two food grate construction on a 34" inch barrel. I was thinking about one grate from 8 inches from the top and another grate i inch from the top. I guess I would need to get the webber lid, but I like the idea of extra capacity. If you think a 34" inch barrel is too short...

Just chomping at the bit to perform surgery on the new barrel.

    UDS Math Grate Location

I am certain that I could have found a decent barrel for around $30. My wife would not have been happy unless she saw the shrink wrap being pulled off a new barrel. I guess there is a trade off. It just costs more money to comply with the wife's requests.

    UDS Math Grate Location

Hello all, Since I have to wait for my barrel, I decided to rough some numbers out. I think I will use a 13x6 expanded metal basket sitting on a charcoal grate 1" from the bottom. That measns that I will have my charcoal up 7 inches from the bottom. If go up another 24 inches from there, my...

Just introduced myself in the roll call section....

Tune here for more on the barbecue drama mini-series.... After a couple of misleading craigslist ads for barrels , (closed barrels instead of open, or food safe versus toxic waste, etc.), I decided to bite the bullet and shell out $122 for a brand new barrel that was 5 miles from home...

Just introduced myself in the roll call section....

Thanks for the link again, but I may have found another score. There is a company 30 minutes North of me that has 200 apple juice and orange juice barrels with lids. He wants $5 for the green cans and $10 for the black ones. I just may pick up two of them and really piss off the better half....

Just introduced myself in the roll call section....

Someone in TX had to post links to some barrels right under my nose. Funny thing is that they did not come up in my initial search for Craigslist San Diego. I will call the first link tomorrow. Chula Vista is too far from here. Thanks for the heads up, I will keep you posted

Just introduced myself in the roll call section....

If you missed it, I am itching to build me one of those UDS's. I have been searching high and low for a 55 gallon barrel, but I have not found one that my wife would approve of. She is over concerned about what was in the barrel. I have access to unlimited closed top barrels that are pristine...

    New guy.....

Hello all, I have been researching several UDS threads and I like the crowd here. I have been searching for a steel barrel now for over two weeks. Once the barrel is obtained, I can begin the building process. I may post a question on the differences between steel barrels in the barbecue thread...
