    Complete Novice Needs Help

Here is my input based on my experience with the WSM and a GOSM-like unit, and a heck of a lot of reading and shopping. With only a screwdriver and pliers, you can be up and running with the WSM (charcoal) or a GOSM or clone (gas). And you'll never need to do any modification to these units to...

    Why not Cowboy??

One interesting thing about CB is that it has no smell when burning. I use mostly mesquite hardwood from Mexico, otherwise Lazzari hardwood lump and I've tried several others too, including orange wood lump. All of those put out significant smoke and flavor, sometimes I barely need to add wood...

Vent settings on a box smoker

I'm still getting used to my Perfect Flame smoker and I'm wondering how you all use your vents on your propane smokers. So far, I've kept the bottom vents closed as much as possible and the same with the top (though on mine, you can't get the top one more than 1/2 closed for some reason). I...

    Insulating a Perfect Flame?

That hardibacker mod looks pretty nice. I'm a bit confused about the hardibacker material though. Based on the r-factor and its composition, it doesn't seem like a very good insulator. Seems more like a heavy heat sink. Of course that works pretty good in a BGE -so could it be of use here...

Best Way To Convert A Gas Bbq, To A Smoker??

One problem is that gas grills are not designed to trap air or smoke like smokers do. I'd look for ways to plug up the air-flow and trap the smoke produced long enough to flavor the meat. Heavy duty foil might work for this. I don't think you'll have any luck getting wood started then turning...

    Different flavor

Nice work! Thanks for posting. Is that some thermal insulation on the stacks? If so, does keeping the stacks warmer increase flow or something?

    Insulating a Perfect Flame?

Yeah, I've seen 1200F rating on mineral wool. Thicknesses in these kinds of products are usually 1", 1.5", and 2" Here's an example I'd probably put some waterproof/windproof outer layer over the insulation too.

    Insulating a Perfect Flame?

thanks guys I'll check my thermometers. I'll take a look at the flame too, I recall some yellow at the tips .. I know you can adjust the venturi air intake on most burners like this, I'll see what I come up with. All this aside, do you think insulating would save gas? I know there are models...

    Wood chunks catching on fire

did you say you tried soaking the chips? I've read that there is such a thing as too dry when it comes to wood for smoking. If this is the same wood as last summer, it could become too dry depending on where it was stored. Try putting a handful of chips in a plastic baggie with just enough...

    Insulating a Perfect Flame?

Hi all I'm using a gas smoker from Lowe's - the Perfect Flame, which looks just like the BB GOSM, at least from the outside. I'm pretty happy with the unit, done a few cooks already. But I'm wondering about putting a sheet of rigid rock-wool around the outside of the cabinet for insulation...
