well, that didn't last long. Started pricing the materials needed for this build and happened to stumble across a few cheap 120 gallon propane tanks.
Using the tanks will save me 50%-75% vs the cost of building one from scratch, so I guess I'll head that route instead. I'll start a different...
I'm designing a smoker that can be converted back and forth between a standard offset and a reverse flow. I want to be able to have the ability to have even temps across the grate when needed, but also have a pretty good gradient when the day requires that as well. Kinda how some of the reverse...
drinking and designing tonight... I've got one other idea that combines the above two and I think will be the winner (unless the baffle idea is terrible).
The stacks will clear the door, albeit barely so. I can work with those tolerances though.

I figured out that if I can shrink the width of the FB door and scoot it away from the CC a little, I may be able to get it to clear the stack if I set it up with a baffle in the CC. So, assuming that baffles aren't a terrible option, am I better off with a square transition or just pipe to the...
The issue I'm having is that if I run the stack into the side of the CC at grate height, the FB lid (if hinged at the top) will hit it when I try to open the lid.
I am thinking that I'll put the stack in the top/back of the smoker and put a baffle in to get me down to grate height. That'll...
The plan was to have a small door on the side for adding logs and scraping ash out and whatnot, but to have the big door so that I could use a cooking grate in the FB for searing when needed and also drop a full charcoal basket in when I use one on occasion.
I supposed I could just sear on the...
Hi all -
I have a build thread going ( https://www.smokingmeatforums.com/threads/convertible-build-offset-to-rf.288961/ ) but figured that I might get a more direct response to the questions I have if I made separate threads for them as I went along. Presently, the hurdle I'm trying to...
So I have re-read some of the threads related to RF calculators here and opted to go with the 50% oversized opening. Worst case scenario, it's too much and I can block it off a bit.
On to the next hurdle - the exhaust stacks.
Seems like everyone recommends having them at or as near to grate...
I have read a few folks' posts about how to interpret the various bbq calculators that are on the internet.
Based on what I have read and the following info:
It looks like my sizing is about right. The firebox shows oversized a little, but that should be fine once you take into account that...
My reasoning for the convertible is that I would like one of each but don't have the time or space for two. There are times (ie: cooking 4 briskets at once) where the RF would be fantastic because of the fairly even cook temps throughout the CC. Other times (ie: cooking brisket, ribs, wings and...
Hi all -
I'm getting started in the design phase of a smoker I'd like to build. I figured I'd start a thread to keep track of everything and get some feedback from y'all along the way.
My intent is to make an offset that I can convert back and forth between a RF and a standard offset. I have...
Hi all -
I'm from the southeast corner of WA State. I started at age 18 with a gas grill and it didn't take long to realize that I wanted something else. My dad used an offset and a charcoal grill alongside a pellet and a BGE and, after observing some of his cooks, I decided pellet grills fit...
