I'm considering buying an element and a controller to convert my UDS to electric to do just what you're wanting to do. Then I can pull the element out and go back to charcoal when I need/want to.
I have a side box with AMNPS for the smoke

I have an Oklahoma Joes, and an ugly drum (uds). After using the OKJ for so long, I decided I was tired of using 15-20lbs of Charcoal for a small smoke. So I built a UDS.

Yes, when you order a setup off their site, they suggest the 10cfm for Drums. Maybe I'll give them a call or just try it out on a dry run. That's probably the best thing to do.
I like your idea though, sounds like it would work.
I finished up my first couple UDS builds this week. One for my dad for Christmas and one for myself. I added an AMNPS Ammo box mod to mine, which I'm still fine tuning. I need to work on my pellet lighting skills and probably add more airflow to keep it lit.

Just picked up myself an AMNPS from the KCBBQ store, but its going on an UDS.. so Im not much help for the MES. The mailbox (or ammo can) mod looms pretty slick.
