    Galvanized Metal inside Smoker?

Is there anything else added to the zinc that's used in making galvanized sheet metal or galvanized bolts? I wouldn't think there would be, but things like lead and cadmium really don't belong anywhere near food. I'm sure that lead is not in anything new.

    Why so few Oven/Range conversions?

They aren't really that much (if any) bigger or heavier than a fridge conversion, especially if you strip the unused parts out. I moved a burner from the stove to the floor of the oven on both of mine and wired those burners to 120V, to keep from burning up the chip pan, and that worked great...

    Why so few Oven/Range conversions?

Is there a particular reason that converting ranges to smokers doesn't seem very common? I converted two and put a pipe between them so either can be the smoke source for the other. It seems like a pretty flexible setup and required very little cash. They're already designed for cooking and have...

Newbie needing some help identifying some wood.

Let me first say that it's really hard to tell from these photos and I'm not familiar with a lot of trees from regions other than my own. Furthermore, I have no idea if you are anywhere close to the Northeastern US where the trees I'm familiar with are, because you haven't filled in your...

    Galvanized Metal inside Smoker?

I think galvanized is probably not as risky as many people here seem to think it is. I haven't seen any studies showing otherwise. If you weld on galvanized steel in a confined space, you can definitely suffer from some nasty symptoms, but if you eat a teeny tiny amount of residue that might...

    I'm Prepared To Be Convinced

Thanks, I hadn't thought about using it for only cold smoking. I thought of this more as a "go big or stay home" project. It isn't the effort that bothers me, it's maximizing the value I get from having it around. I could put a lock on it and make it a tool box, but I'm thinking about the...

So where are the pics? I might be doing my own build on an old GE fridge.

    I'm Prepared To Be Convinced

I've just acquired an old (1947) GE refrigerator. I can see myself using it for any of a number of purposes, one of them being a smoker conversion. I smoke in two converted electric ovens with a four inch pipe between them so I can generate smoke in either to cold smoke in the other (one is...

Another Newbie, newly acquired fridge and of course, questions.

I use an analog oven thermostat for the upper heating element (240V) in an oven that I have converted to a smoker. It does not vary the current to the element. It just switches it on and off near the setpoint temperature, which gives it a swing of about 25 degrees. I have developed a way to...

Another Newbie, newly acquired fridge and of course, questions.

I have experience with a stove burner rewired to 120V and placed in the bottom of an oven for heating a chip pan. It takes very long to get the smoke started when the burner is on full and I use a cast iron pan. OTOH, it doesn't take long at all to get smoke from a cheap aluminum pie tin and...

How did you come up with your screen name?

Cedar Eater was my screen name on the first home-related forum that I joined when I moved to my house in the woods back in '00. It was ForestryForum.com. I was cutting a lot of northern white cedar down while making trails for deer hunting and putting in a garden. Cedar chainsaw shavings were...

    Orange Wood

I wouldn't worry in the least about the chainsaw bar oil. It's a very tiny amount and most of the oil ends up in the shavings.

    First Venison Back Strap

I cooked my first venison back straps today and I think I stumbled on a good recipe. It was easily the best I've ever had. I cooked two roasts that were about six inches long. My plan was to braise rather than dry roast, which isn't normally done for venison loin roasts. Instead of searing them...

Michigan members group own map, Where are you in Michigan?

Hello from Alcona County. I'm new to smoking and have a strong desire to smoke with wood harvested from my property. I'm hoping someone will give me advice on smoking Michigan's fleet meat, the whitetail deer. If I could make venison as tender and flavorful as the pork butt that was my first...

    seasoning smoking wood

Shortening the length will help. If you cut the 4" diameter roundwood into 1" disks, it will season very quickly. Drying it in sunlight or in a warm dry place will also help. Splitting it will help, too, but reducing the length does the best job of shortening the path the moisture has to take to...
