No i didn't have to thin it .just sprayed it and it went on great . I promise you don't want to paint your big smoker with rattle cans. Get cheap gun i know harbour freight send coupon for that gun for$ 10. I have painted a trailer , shipping container ,and smokers with that gun it did a great...
This is gun i used on mine . I even found quarts of the bbq black on ebay. My walmart even carried quarts of the bbq black. The bbq black is somewhere between a flat and a high gloss. I was impressed with paint job on the smoker i bulit and painted.

Good looking build . I am planning my next build and was going to build on a trailer. Is 11ga steel a good size tubing for trailer frame? Mine won't be as heavy my tank is 150 gal.
