    Intake styles?

How much clearance you need for the slide not to bind? I guess it should be somewhat snug so minimal amount of air leaks around the slide, but still allow some wiggle room for heat expansion and such...?

Yeah it's on the bottom :-)

    Intake styles?

Finally got something done, Most of the cuts went fine, but the first cut didn't penetrate fully (too fast feedrate). Of course the first cut was one of the pie vent intakes ;) Gotta do some manual work with plasma on that one, otherwise they look pretty good and accurate enough. I might have...

I'm going to cut it with cnc plasma, so no rough cut required (hopefully) :D

Is 5/16" of overlap on all sides of the holes enough for the pie vent?

    Intake styles?

That's awesome. If you'd only make one row of intakes above fire, which one would it be? The lower one? I think two rows is way too hard to fabricate for my first smoker.

Hmm yeah you're right about the overlap, I once thought about that but forgot about it :D More Sketching to do then...

Well, How's this looking? I lowered the fire grate level a lot, since I didn't need that extra space without the vents on the side. This is the bottom of the FB. The 6 segment pie vent is about 75 square inches fully opened. Here's the backside of the smoker (straight across from the FB to...

    Making quick easy door flanges

Ok, thanks. Can you think of any reason why stick welding wouldn't work? I haven't MIG welded, so I can't really compare them that much. I'd guess MIG produces less heat...?

Is there a reason why the bottom vent is more towards the back of the firebox? Draft? I was sketching it dead middle on the bottom plate.

    Making quick easy door flanges

Hey I have a quick question about the flanges. I'm a novice welder and fabricator, so this might sound dumb: How big are the notches? They look quite small, around 1/2" long maybe? How about the spacing, it's hard to figure out the scale from the pictures.

Thanks, I think I'm going Ribwizzard's way ;) Let's see how it goes, this is my first stick burner so I'm hoping the learning curve isn't too steep compared to "traditional" vents.

Do you have a picture of your ash pan? I'm not sure how to incorporate it under the FB but still maintain a good flow of air from the vent.

    Intake styles?

Okay, that makes sense. Based on that analogy, mine's probably still way too high. I don't really have a clue how many logs I would need, but I think it wouldn't be too high stack at all... I know that Ribwizzard puts the lower went on bottom, but I don't really want hot ash falling through...

    Intake styles?

Hi, I'm currently building my first RF smoker out of 160 gallon tank. Everything has been sized pretty much by what the calculator said, my FB is going to be around 108% oversized and the throat is also a bit oversized. I need to cut my FB plates soon. But I can't really decide on intake...
