I have a Traeger and I am very happy with it but it doesn't have a stick burner flavor profile. From my research the pellet grill the comes closest to what you are looking for would be a Mack 1, or 2 star General.
It would be hard to beat the XL. The size and capability are about the best you can get, at that price. If you are unhappy with the controller, after you use it some, you can always upgrade it with a Savannah Stoker PID controller and have a great combination at a good cost.
