    200 gallon RF newbie

For the grate spacing top to bottom, most folks cook butts so figure the height of a butt and go from there, 8" should be plenty. If you have a bunch of extra material, you may want to allow for a rib/brisket configuration since they are thin but there will be a temperature difference between...

My first build - 120 gallon tank

Looks great Joe! I see sparks in the garage still draws your son like a moth to the light, great stuff.  You don't have to over do the burnout if it doesn't have much of a gas smell, just a good fire so it will loosen the paint and make it easy for you to get off with a wire brush on your angle...

    Temperature Control???

The main think I can think of is to get the smoker hot and stabilized before you put meat on. Maybe start with a couple chimneys of charcoal to establish your coal bed and then throw 3-4 splits on to get it up to temperature. Hold that for as much time as you have to make sure you get thin blue...

    Which cooks better?

Short and fat is always better, the smoke has less distance to travel under the RF plate so less friction and easier air flow.

Yes, you can take a tape and eyeball the end starting from the top of the CC at 15 5/8 wide, it should be really close to 4 1/2 inches down towards the center. It's easier from the top to do the sanity check. Yes, when you make the firebox that width, the top extends into the chamber, it's...

    reverse flow build

The area under the RF plate, area of the FB to CC opening, and the area of the end of the RF plate where the smoke turns up to the grates are all the same. Your tank is short and fat, very good thing, as such, short and fat tanks don't require as tall a FB to CC opening since they are working on...

Need Help With A New Reverse Flow Build 275 gallon

If you can get your hands on some 3 x 3 angle iron, you could put two pieces together like channel... I__I, cut some slits to inset them into the dome, then cut and plate the ends and cut holes in the now 6" flat. It wouldn't be too hard and it doesn't look like your dome curves much that...

    New guy building RF smoker

Weld the RF plate just above the top of the football and you will be fine. Most guys leave 4-6" above the RF plate for the first grate. On yours, it should work out to about the 3 o'clock position and you will be good to go. Most guys won't take time to read all the threads but we are happy to...

Hmmm, is the space between the lower cutouts narrower than the width of the cutouts themselves? Could cause a problem......

    325 Gal Reverse flow

What?? It didn't explode when you set it on fire???  Don't get it too hot, just enough to blister the paint so you can get it off with a wire brush on an angle grinder. They can warp a little if they get too hot.
