I have built a clone and went with only a 6" ash area it will work fine but you will have to empty out ash more often is the only down fall but for me was trying to make as small of a cooker as possible and knew that going in and it doesn't bother me at all.
Like Dave said if he used a calculator it will probably have very little in the way of serious mods needed. With any cooker you buy you will find a few things you want to change to suit your style.

Well after seeing Chef JimmyJ's thread on turning a corned point into a pastrami I figured it was something I could actually do so I gave it a go.
Overall I was very very pleased with it and will be making again soon.
