Thanks, it took some head scratching but I really wanted to stay away from counter weights if at all possible. It ended up working out nicely, and they open all the way up so I can get them right in line with the tank for cleaning or if I need the room for something.

You should be able to shrink them back no problem, but I usually don't season my grates until I fire up the cooker for the first time. It is just easier that way, since it is just indirect heat.
