Exactly, that is where I got the idea from, sorry I didn't give the credit where the credit was due. That is the same one I use.
The problem I find with the vent closed is that after the unit get up to temperature, the heating element doesn't come on that often after that. The chips rely on the...
I too cook only with the vent wide open. But, I do not close it when not using to keep the bugs and critters out. You see, I also use it to cold smoke cheese and other things and have to have the vent open when using the AMNS and, since it is not hot while cold smoking, those critters could get...
I just stand down wind of my smoker until my skin is permeated with the scent and then don't take a bath for about a month or until the smoke smell goes away.
NOT!!!! LOL
Wow! I learned something new today, I didn't know Tod started making a tube version pellet smoker too. Anyway, I use the 6x6 AMNS for all my cold smoking needs. Have not had a need to use one for use with hot smoking.
I do love my AMNS when am doing cheese and other things like spices, nuts etc. etc. that need to be cold smoked. But then I bought mine before he came up with the AMNPS but still use chips and the MOJO bricks when doing hot smokes. With the MES I have no problem putting in chips or blocks...
The model he lists (20070210) is an MES (yes it is electric) but it is an analog "electric" smoker, not a digital. It has a control on the bottom left side of the smoker similar to what you would find on an electric skillet, with a big knob you turn to set the temp. It does not have the big vent...
Hey, Themole,
I read that you got an MES 30 but am curious as to why you would want to run the wire for the probe through the door. I have an MES 30 and just stick it through the vent on top. You should be smoking with the vent wide open anyway so there is no problem with having the probe wire...
Be careful when using a chain saw, most chains are lubricated with a petroleum oil which would make it not good for smoking. Best to use a clean hand saw made for trees or to completely clean the chain on the saw and lube with a veg. oil.
Have you made sure that the door adjustment on the latch is tight enough. They come from the factory a little loose in my opinion. You should make sure there is a good amount of pressure on the door seals so as not to let too much air in thu that way.
I would suggest that all you newbies out there that are asking questions about stack vent locations, suggestions about putting it on a trailer or suggestions about postponing the wedding until he get a good design should go back to the beginning and read all 12 pages of this thread before you...
If your pellets (or sawdust) are going out a lot, they may have too much moisture in them. You might want to try spreading them on a micro wave proof sheet of something and microwave them for about a minute on high.
Just because the chip tray now has the capability of holding twice (or more)...
The piece of metal is a spot welded on part of the smoke box. It is not a removable part and will not come apart from the old small smoke box. If you did not see the metal that would be between the heating element and the old chip tray, then you need glasses. Because as I said before, it is "AS...
The extra piece of metal was not on the tray itself, it was part of the smoke box that the tray slides into. If you look at the video at Masterbuilt that shows how to install the tray upgrade you can see as plain as day the sheet of metal that was between the heating element and the chip tray...
You don't want to add any more chip in the tray than you did before the upgrade. The upgrade allows the wood in the tray to have access to more heat from the heating element and to spread out a little more. Just continue the way you did before using the chip loader and you will do just fine...
I believe it to be the Cashew nuts shell. You ever wonder why you never see Cashews sold in their shell? Read this and you will know why and also why not to use the shells (if you could find them) for smoking:

Would really like to try the fruit of the Cashew...
