    Some UDS pre-build thoughts

It's going to be extremely hard to control temps with a Kamado style air intake. I have 1 inch pipe on both my Drums, one on each side with a 1 inch cap in the middle. That lid that came with your drum doesn't have a 2 inch bung hole? If it does you can use a 2 inch close pipe that can screw in...

just finished UDS-55 w/rotisserie, lots of pics

They sell the rib-o-later kit online for the UDS. It's pretty close to what you have. I've have 2 fancy Drum Smokers, but nothing like yours. It's pretty cool. I have a Pitmaster IQ 120 for mine I was going to use for Competition but once I started cooking on my drum realized I don't need it...

    Ugly Drum Smoker build

They sell a thin sheet of expanded metal at Lowes and Home Depot, it's in a box by the angle iron bin. If your going to make a square basket you can use 3/4 #9. Far as size not sure all my drum smokers are 55 gallon. I'd do 3 3/4 one in each side and one in the middle with ball valves for fine...

My new UDS is to hot

It sounds like you had to much charcoal to start. I usually only run about 6 lbs of coal in mine, 8 for long cooks. Also if your using wood chips they tend to try to keep a small fire when you open the lid. Like Smokin Al said use the minion method to start it.

    Smoker paint!

I forgot I've got a drum smoker I sand blasted down and cleared it with high temp clear. It's under a porch and covered most of the time but it's held up nice. It's been cleared for almost a year now. I don't cook on it much just at Competitions mostly.
