I am not real familiar with charcoal units, but I would guess it is not insulated and you might have an issue with holding a constant temp.
I am sure there are plenty of expert charcoal user on here that will be able to help you out.

I use a MES 30 and I live in Montana. I smoked some baby backs last weekend and the temp was 6 degrees when i started my smoker. In my case the only effect I saw regarding the outside temp was the length of time the smoker took to heat up.

a quick question, when you removed the factory vent did the 3" elbow fit right in or did you have to modify the hole size?

This last weekend here in Montana it was a balmy 6 degrees when i fired up my MES 30. It heated up fine,took a little longer but no big deal. I got my baby back ribs in around noon and was planning on using the 2-2-1 method. I was pretty sure that the only effect I would see due to the weather...

I smoked some baby backs to take to a football gathering today. When I started the ribs the outside temp was a balmy 7 degrees.
CMILLS the built in thermometer in my MES is accurate about 20% of the time. I have check it with both boiling and iced water and the consistency of the thermometer is not real good. I have an external one on order.
I smoked two racks of baby backs using the 2-2-1 method and some ABT's filled with cream cheese chives and topped with a piece of pepper jack cheese and bacon. Yum!
