Cut the top off of a wine barrel about 10 inches from the top, line the bottom with brick. A few inches below the top rim of the bottom 1/2, drill holes through the sides and use eye bolts as rests for a round grill grate. Load it up with coals, put the meat on and cover with the cut off lid...
Do this & you'll be loved by all. I just did a 5.5lb brisket at 275 degrees, it took 7 hrs to get to 185degrees. Remember you'll hit a stall around 150 to 160 degrees, don't turn up the temp, let it cook. It can last a couple hours on a piece that size but just relax & enjoy the cook. I cook fat...
Next time cut the tops off the jalapenos, clean out the membrain & seeds, stuff with cream cheese, havardi chees then wrap with bacon. Give her one of these & she'll love you for ever, they're like candy.
Looks like you did a fine job, don't be skeerd of the packer, they're a blast to cook. I did a 16lber on a traeger Jr, it was in the sauna for 17hrs at 225 degrees. Had to build a box above the pellet chamber to hold more pellets so I could go to sleep for a while. When I use my built in block...
Thanks everyone, It was fantastic and it was gone by days end. Can't wait to do the next one. Family coming down in a couple weeks, Brisket & jalapeno poppers will be part of whats on the menu. (love those poppers.)
I've never had to remove my pellets unless I wanted a different flavor profile. As far as part failures go, never had one. I've used a traeger Jr for over a year and never had an issue. My BIL has had a Traeger (USA made one) for at least 4 or 5 years & I know he's never had an issue as well...
I don't thonk you'll have ss much trouble as you think. I'd give iy a try & see how long it takes to get to 200 degrees, then when the weather gets better, time it again. With the insulator I bet there isn,t much difference.
Rec Tec has 6 months same as cash right now. Not sure you'll ever find a used one though. On a rare occasion I've come across a Traeger on CL, but I was hunting almost daily by using Traeger as the key word . You might consider a Traeger Jr. if you don't need a large grill. I've done 16lb...
The boiling point of water is a good way to test your thermometer's accuracy. Put the temp probe in the boiling water, don't submerse the whole thing though, some can be damaged. Check your gauge to see what it reads, it should be very close to 213 degrees. The boiling point will go up or down a...
Some more details on the Rec Tec for you. The stainless steel used is 304 grade, better than the 430 you'll find on some units. It also has a button allowing you to feed extra pellets when opening the lid. You can also alternate between actual temp & set temp. I don't remember if I mentioned it...
This is a steak I made on my new Rec Tec. I turned it on, set it to 450 walked away for about 30 minutes. Came back, threw the steak on for 5 minutes, gave it a 1/4 turn for another 5 minutes. Next I flipped it & did the same. Came out perfect. |The flash from my camera made it look a little...
What I hope is some good news for you, I have a Traeger Jr with an Ortech controller for a round 2 years now. I've made everything from ribs, chicken, jalapeno poppers and even a couple 16lb briskets. All were cooked to perfection and It has served me very well. I've moved up to a Rec Tec now...
The BGW was one|I looked at too, I like the ability to slide the pellet pot out for cleaning. My only concern is the controller, it's similar to the Ortech style controller that I put on my Traeger Jr. I had 40 degree swings in temp, that may be due to the Jr being so small but I didn't want to...
I started ith a Traeger Jr about a year ago. While it served me very well, it was time to go bigger. |I thought that the size would be the main difference but the Eec |Tec actually does a better job of cooking. I think it's due to the absolute control over temprature. This thing doesn't budge...
