Glad to see this post.  I'm building my first smoker as well and never intended on doing anything about the mill scale...happy that I wasn't crazy and about to kill myself or others ;)

    Smoker build Welder under $500??

I just went thru this myself.  I started with the Harbor Freight 110V flux core welder.  It definitely wasn't up to snuff.  I just wasn't getting the penetration needed for the job.  I bit the bullet and returned that, spent another 100 bucks and upgraded to the 240V DC stick welder.  A few...

Thanks!  Yes...anxious for sure.  Was happy to be burning wood...but you would know the feeling for sure...I'm ready to burn some meat! :) She flowed well...a little concern for the amount of wood I was chewing up...but that is 99% due to my error rather than anything with the "whale."  Just...

More progress.   Plenum getting fabricated up: Done...and stack welded on... Got the deflector plate fab'd and installed and the tuning plate rails installed.....but then ran out of daylight to cut out the tuning plates.  Oh well...it was FINALLY time to light a fire.  Just some testing...
