    Sorry, i was referring to the stack length. If the calculator says with a 4" diameter  pipe I would need to have a stack length of 20.4". Does this mean from the top of the cooking chamber, grate level or does it just require 20.4" of 4" diameter pipe no matter where it's placed?

    put a dry sump in. Dig a big ass hole and fill it with sand. You can get a decent sand for about 6-10 bucks a ton.     I bought the 40" from sam's also. I have to say, that while this unit is very easy to use the quailty of food it produces is far from any charcoal smoker. I actually am in the process of converting it to a side firebox and removing the heating element and installing the bbq guru digi-q fan system.
