Which way would you have removed the lid to make it useable?
I tried a few different methods to remove the lid that would preserve a good seal but the construction of this drum just wouldnt seem to let me.

I thought about running a thermal section of hose around the rim of the barrel to make up the gap created from cutting the lid off. Then sealing around the rim of the lid with thermal tape to sit ontop of the hose. I dont know if this...

Tonight I cut the lid off the drum unfortunately the method I posted above was not possible with the type of drum I have. So instead I cut the lid off from inside the lip.
