    did you season it inside and out? on your first fire you need to oil the outside and inside of the unit. .. this will sustain the paint a while longer than normal. paints peeling on the firebox right? like any smoker, that box gets too hot and the paint cant handle it... as soon as it starts...

    I am not done with the shelf yet.. i think i am going to reinforce the existing holes with 9/16 screw anchors, this shelf is just hallow and the bottom of it is some poly wood/plastic hard surface.

    Ikea makes 2 stainless steel shelves. 1 doesnt fit, i tried. the other has another 8" of space that the original shelf did not.  http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/20031289/   the damn shelf is hallow... so this is what i did to keep everything locked in until i can buy some...

    so..  as a OKJ owner.. let me help you with a few of these items.  first off, please realize that OKJs have breathing issues. Its extremely hard to get the heat up on one of these past 300..  the tuning plate has 2 features and one fault.  it blocks the heat coming from the heat box...

    ok.. so heres the deal. im guessing you bought the premade tuning plate from bbqsmokermods ? that gap youre speaking is due to 2 screws from he firebox being in the way. the way around this is to take those 2 screws out, have someone hold the tuning plate on the inside, and drill through those...
