    Firebox insulation question?

I found some kaowool sold by the foot online. http://www.piehtoolco.com/contents/en-us/d1356.html I have not ordered any yet. It does not seem to be a bad price though. jerrald, I would line the outside with the blanket type. I think you can get it in block form and use on the inside if that...

PLANNING FIRST BUILD ( PICS NOW INCLUDED )

You need to use both cook chamber volumes to figure the firebox like you stated. The firebox to cook chamber opening needs to be calculated using both as well. The stack on the horizontal should be calculated using only that cook chamber volume and the total firebox volume. You will be closing...

My first build fixing to get started....

Making good progress. I like it. I would not worry about the stack too much. I don't think that will make a noticable difference. I used a chain and bottle jack to fix my door that sprung in a little. It worked good. I posted a pic of it in my build thread, I don't have access to the pic now to...

    Counter Weights

If you make it short enough it should not interfere with the second one behind it. It will have to be heavier, but you can always fill the pipe to add weight. Mine extends behind the tank less than 3 inches when open. I could have made it shorter if needed. I hear ya on the looks too. I tried...

RF Smoker Planning (and the Build)

I cut it with a torch after I welded the hinges on. I moved around cutting 3 or 4 inches at a time. It did spring in a little on one side. It was less that 1/8" at the worst spot. I could have lived with it but I wanted it perfect. That fixed it. Thanks for the compliments guys. I got a lot...

My first build fixing to get started....

Yes the opening at the end needs to be at least the same as under the RF plate. A little bigger won't hurt a thing I would insert the stack down in the CC some. It will work welded flush though. You can come back and add onto the inside if you are not happy with it when you start cooking

RF Smoker Planning (and the Build)

Thanks Joe I was trying to make it look good. I made the counterweight match the hinge until it turns up. At least if it don't cook good it will be nice to look at.

120 gallon RF build....***UPDATE*** patio to the trailer

Very nice looking smoker. You can call it cheating if you want, but as I sit here blowing black stuff out my nose and looking at the burn spots on my arms, I don't think cheating is a bad thing. You will be enjoying some good smoked groceries while some of us are still cutting, grinding, and...

RF Smoker Planning (and the Build)

That's better. This is all for this week. Headed to work in the morning. Hopefully next week I can get it closed up and build a fire in it.

RF Smoker Planning (and the Build)

I had a couple hours this afternoon, so I figured I would work on my counterweight. I think it worked out pretty good. Less than 10lbs to open and close, balanced in the center. I don't think it could work much better. I can't get any more pics to load for some reason.

    Counter Weights

It will not fall if you lose power. I am not sure about being able to manually operate it. You could look for actuators with that option. You will more than likely need to charge the battery. A small battery charger would be plenty. If you plan to put in a sink, water pump, and water heater you...

    Rookie builder needs some help

That looks like an interesting project. Make sure you add both cook chambers in the calculator to get the firebox big enough to run both if you are planning to do that. I think this will be fun to watch and even more fun to build.

    Counter Weights

Dave's design would let you use a smaller actuator. The one I saw had the ram connected to the door and the other end raised behind it. That would require a stronger actuator, but be simpler to build.

    Rookie builder needs some help

There is a test section here somewhere. Try doing different things there. If they show up there before here, then something was wrong and you need to resubmit them. That will keep duplicates out of this. I had to do that until I got it all figured out.
