    Heating element cord question

    1. What's the wattage of the heating element? And voltage? 2. What kind of cord? 3. What kind of temperature control that you can be sure that it will not go above 180F? dcarch

The function or funtions of the water pan in the "WSM".

Good insulation is the single most important consideration in keeping good temperature control. In my 4.5 cu. ft. converted refrigerator smoker, I am using only a 300 watt light bulb to maintain temperature, and the 300W bulb only need to go on 1/2 the time. dcarch

The function or funtions of the water pan in the "WSM".

Thermal mass (heat sink) is a property of the mass (specific heat) of a substance which enables it to store heat, providing "inertia" against temperature fluctuations. It can take or give away heat, depends on ambient temperature. The issues with water in a smoker environment to be considered...

    Homemade water powered sausage stuffer.

I agree. Air pressure is not going to work because air can be compressed, water cannot. You will not have any control with compressed air. I have a caulking gun powered by an electric drill, that can be used to make a great stuffer. dcarch

Hello all I need help finding a electric burner for my first build.

I agree the exhaust is way too big. Also, check to see if you have a wrong 1500 watt element. May be it is 1500 watts for 240VAC, which will give you only about 450 watts of heat. A heating element works exactly like a light bulb. If it is going bad, it goes bad very quickly, Very hot for a...

Hello all I need help finding a electric burner for my first build.

I have a 4.5 cu. ft. converted refrigerator. I am using a 300 watt halogen lamp as the heat source. It seems to me that the PID controlled lamp only needs to be on 1/2 the time to keep temperature to 190F, which is the maximum temperature I normally smoke food. My smoker uses a cold smoke...

building an arched top on a brick smoker

Still difficult to tell, not enough information. With an arch, the flatter the curve of the arch, the stronger the force to push the two supporting walls out, that's why the cathedrals arches need flying buttresses to push the supports in. dcarch

building an arched top on a brick smoker

Depends on the shape of the arch and the (width) distance of the supporting walls. Need more details. dcarch

Do you think that cost of smoking calculation will make people quit smoking?????

Depends on your method and system. Not considering the cost of meat and seasoning, I use about $0.20 for pellets and another $0.20 of electricity each time I smoke. dcarch

smoking with silica sand instead of water

A couple of factors to consider: 1. What is a good material to use for heat retention? Find a chart of specific heat of common materials by volume (not by weight/mass). Water is actually very good for temperature below 212F. 2. Foiling is counterproductive. It prevents the heat-sink from...

Sand is safe. Otherwise they will shut down all the beaches worldwide, and there will be no camels. dcarch

    cheap dimmer circuit

A very good idea. As a matter of fact, that's exactly what I did. I got a voltage regulator on ebay. Depending on wattage, they are from $3.00 to $10.00.  The one I bought is 240VAC, 4,000 watts. You can use a 240V one to control 120VAC, but not the other way around. A high wattage voltage...

    cheap dimmer circuit

Sorry if you feel that I was trying to insult you. Not what I was trying to do. For a forum with 50,000 members, all suggestions for high power electric work should be done carefully, such as 120VAC is not a world wide standard, and not everyone is as knowledgeable as you are in electrical...

    cheap dimmer circuit

Not all dimmers can handle 1500 watts. Check it out first. A router speed controller can also be used. Or on ebay, high power voltage controllers are cheap. dcarch
