    first build need some help

Here is a link to the circle calculator.  It is not too difficult to figure out and it will allow you to determine the size and height of the opening under the RF plate.  Assume that the area under it should be 1.5 times the FB opening and you should be golden and have plenty of room above the...

Ready to Start 1st build need some advice

Here are a few links that will be of much help for to you.  The first one is Smoker calculator that will make sure everything is sized up well and the second one is a circle calculator that will help you determine things like rack and RF plate height.  If you need anything just let us know...

Q-View is the pictures of the culmination of all of your hard work.  It is the pictures of your new cooker and the tasty stuff inside of it.  It's the view of the BB-Q!!!

I have to say that is one of the best I've seen so far.  The detail to attention and time spent planning really show through.  I love the coal basket.  Great job!

No problem.  That is what places like this are for.  The only thing we take in payment is pics of the build and that sweet Q-view!!

Most guys place the FB about 1/4 to 1/3, of it's length, under or into the tank.  So basically your FB will sit 5 to 7 inches into the tank.  If the end of the cooker is flat, meaning you cut the round end off of the tank and replaced it with plate steel, then I would just mount it on the end...

That does sound good.  I'm going to have to try it.  The more I think of it the more my mouth waters!

I went back and used your numbers and the chimney should be 36" above the cooker.  So you might want to mount that 4" pipe 12" down instead of just 8".  Other than that I think you are golden!!

Sounds like you have put those calculators to good use.  I have not crunched the numbers but they seem about right.  One exception is the Chimney.  I would shorten it to below 40" if possible.  Obviously you will need a slightly larger pipe, but I think it would help with the draft.  Second, and...

About the fat cap....I have always trimmed mine down to about 1/4 inch or less.  I think it helps the meat to cut more evenly and perhaps a touch faster.  Fat is an insulator after all.  Considering how the fat will soften and even melt, I don't know how wrapping around the meat would work.  How...

I think the rotisserie is a great idea.  I have tossed that around myself several times.  Give it a try and let us know if it makes a difference for you.

That calculator is nice and as a back up reference, here is another calculator that I like to use, as well as, a circle calculator.  Between the three of them, you should be spot on perfect with this build.  Let us know if you need anything else. http://www.1728.org/circsect.htm...

    First build

Dave, that is a great idea.  I believe someone on this forum has already done it.  I remember seeing it somewhere and thinking it was simply brilliant.  I don't know why it is not common place.  I don't remember whose build it was but I am pretty sure it was in this forum. Berry, I think you...

    First build

China, I have thought the same thing about water cooling the CC, but have since learned that once the water heats up, the air temp continues to rise to the desired temp.  While the RF plate is a good shield from the radiant heat, the water is better and has the additional advantage of dispersing...

    My 1st RF build

Personally, I would put in on the top of the end with the FB.  I would also extend it into the tank as far down as my lowest grate.  The portion that is inside the CC is in addition to the 24" above the tank.  Give your door placement, you should have plenty of room to do this without any...

    My 1st RF build

I would put it in the door as close to the grate as possible.  This will give you the best temp of the air closest to the food.  If it is possible, I would add one to the other door and place them either just outside the handles or just above them.  The most important thing is to keep them as...
