The bowl has holes drilled out of it and I thought about drilling more. The bowl also has a smaller grate that fits into it where the coals would actually sit so they would be sitting up off of the floor (so to speak) and have air flowing below them. Kinda like this:
I was thinking I could...
Right on...I was just curious as the cans say not to use on anything that gets hotter than 200 degrees F.
In other news I bought most of my supplies (minus the paint) and burned out one of the barrels.
I was wanting to use the bottom bowl of the kettle I bought as the charcoal basket/ash...
I got some old frosting containers from Hy-Vee that I use. I asked if they had any they could spare and gave me 2 with lids. They're not quite 5 gallons, but I've done a few chickens all at once and I've done about a 12 lb turkey. They work out really well and they were the right price!
Good...
Awesome! Good luck to ya! I bought a Webber knock-off and plan on pillaging all the parts I can from it including the lid. I figure for $20 I got the grate, the lid, the ash bowl, legs, and *cheap-o* wheels...I can't go too wrong.

Yay! My barrels are here...wound up being $5 a piece and $10 for delivery. Not bad IMO. I can't wait to burn them out and start my project! I do have a question that I haven't really seen addressed in my searches. What kind of paint can I use on the outside? I'm assuming it has to be a...
I thought about sandblasting. I think our metal shop here at school has one. I wonder if I could 'borrow' it after hours, or have a student work on a 'special' project...hmm...
Thanks again for the info. I'll have to find some pallets or something. I don't have fire wood just lying around...
OK. I was curious if the pine would leave a bad residue, but it sounds like it might be ok. I'm just looking for a cheap source of wood to do the burning as all I have are my chunks that I use in my smoker.
Another question now:
Are there any safe chemicals that would do the job just as well...
Good call. I was more curious than anything. I'll have to get a hold of some wood to do this. I'm assuming a person would want wood that would typically be used for smoking as well to do this. Yes? I wouldn't want to use pine, etc., etc., to do the job...
Thanks for the great info.

If it's a food grade barrel is there still a need to do a 'burn out'? Do I need to burn the outside paint off? Thanks for your help. I'm looking forward to this build!

That's awesome! I ordered up 4 of 'em. 2 for me and 2 for Wutang (since he lives close). The guy said they had steel drums of various steel grades (some thicker than others). I told him to give me 4 of the thickest ones. Thought they might hold heat better. Is that a good choice...
^^What he said. I love cherry. I mix with apple and sometimes mulberry. I also like it with a touch of alder. Can't say I've heard of any cherry being poisonous...

The guy just e-mailed me back and said it'd be $10 to deliver. I think for $15 I'm going to jump on that deal. I'm pretty pumped about that prospect!
