I've considered getting a whirly-pop for roasting my own beans, but my biggest problem is the smoke. We don't have a range hood, so unless I can run my attic fan, the smoke takes most of the fun out of things.
Too many variables to say for certain (amount of wind, direction of wind, ambient temps, rain) but you should be able to get 2-3 hours out of it. At least that has been my experience.
I don't think you'll ever be able to make the temps completely even from end to end. I used some 16 gauge steel for a deflector/plates and the best I can get is about a 25* difference from end to end. Maybe with a 1/4" thick deflector, it would be less, but all the heat is coming from the one...
Those are morel mushrooms. You eat them (cooked). They are probably the best tasting mushroom around. Here in Ks., there is about a 1 month window when you can find them, so they are pretty desirable.
I know what you mean. It seems like something always comes up on the weekends I've been tentatively planning a smoke.
To tide me over, during the week I'll do mini-smokes. Something that doesn't take all night/day...things like burgers/brats, a fatty, meatballs for spaghetti. Obviously, no...
I've been hiding out for the winter so maybe I missed it, but what does the fatty piston do exactly?
(I couldn't log on here this winter, people in nice climates smoking meat made me too jealous)
No problem, I'd be happy to help any way I can. :) I am far from the be all end all source of knowledge. All I know is from my personal experience of having potbellies for the last 18 years or so. We did know a couple of breeders years ago when they were really in fashion, one small time, one...
They do make good pets. After Max passes, I doubt we'll get another one. Max has been an outside pet for going on ten years. One reason, the scent gland, it really can stink. Looking back, we should have had it removed when the vet had to surgically remove one of his his nuts (it never...
I didn't want to be the one to come out and say it...but...there are no mini blood lines...just selective breeding and underfeeding. All Vietnamese potbellies (the black ones) come from the same line.
Breads them...for frying?
They are good pets. Smart, loving, free fertilizer, low/no shedding, clean, easily housebroken, relatively disease free (depending upon location very few vaccinations are required)
...but there are downsides.
They constantly hunt and root for food. You cannot keep...
Good. Once a sow starts going into heat, she'll go into it about every 3 weeks. It will get annoying (we had a female many years ago but she got the cancer).
Don't underfeed her to keep her small...
Oh cool...a mini potbelly. I didn't think they had perfected the breeding of those yet.
Max probably weighs between 75 and 100lbs. We don't know his exact weight, he's too hard to get to the vet in his old age (he's 14) so our vet makes house calls if needed.
She's fixed I assume..?
Sassafras contains safrole...which has caused cancer in laboratory rats and has been banned (as an additive) by the FDA. Growing up, my grand mother used to always make sassafras tea for a summer time treat for the family. No one ever got cancer.
