It is Begun! My First Smoker Build

I was worried about swelling too. Especially with piano hinge, which is another option we're considering.

It is Begun! My First Smoker Build

So given that the door overhangs the FB opening 1/2" all around, would this still mount properly? Would I need to weld the hinge to the edge of the door instead of the face? My brother in law says he's not seeing how it will work, so he's exploring other options.

SO I'm told the link is a no-no. Fair enough. The hinge JckDnls posted below is the one I'm eyeballing.

Is it permissible to post a link to the hinge I'm considering so you guys can give thoughts on it?

Dave, great minds think alike... I had that thought as well, but I need to have the hinges on the left side of the door so I can use the rifle action as the door latch. I was shown a nice looking weld-on hinge that I may try, it's low profile and looks really nice. What do you recommend for a...

This is the FB with no door in place. The door is larger than the opening all the way around.

Ok, now I find that I've stepped in it and I need to see if you guys can help bail me out. When I designed the FB door, I used a sliding plate vent system, also borrowed from MTMSEVEN.But, unlike him, I did not account for hinge placement, and now I find that I have nowhere to place my lower...

It is Begun! My First Smoker Build

I'm having a hard time finding what should be basic info... What is the preferred material to use for the stack? I know I want to stay away from galvanized, other than that am I just looking for a massive hunk of steel pipe? I didn't find any black duct pipe that seemed suitable. I may just be...

Dave, it sounds like you've probably forgotten more about welding than I'll ever learn. Thanks for you insight, it's much appreciated. Thanks to all who have offered help, it's all helping me along the path to see blue smoke coming from my baby's chimney. (that kinda sounds like a euphemism...)

Dave, we've been using 6013 rods for the smoker, but it was recommended that I use 7018 for the chain links. Your thoughts on that?

Keith, I'm going to make up a charcoal chimney starter burner, and that will probably be about as far as it goes.

Stanley, that's something I hadn't thought of. Unfortunately we're beyond the point of no return on that, so it'll have to stay as-is and I'll deal with any such issues as they arise. So here's a progress report: Despite the large wheels, it's not gonna be towable. This axle was eating wheel...
