    Thrift Store/Garage Sale Scores

Vacuum sealer is a good thought. We have picked up several small shop vacs to clean out ash. Don't feel so bad when one dies if you only paid $5 for it.

Big Green Egg vs Traeger Pro and Offset Wood Smoker

If you are looking for good flavor and convenience, a pellet burner can be a great choice. The secret to pellet grills is like your BGE - LOW and Slow. Pellet grills burn pellets for both heat and smoke, but they are in an inverse relationship. The hotter you burn, the less smoke you get. So, if...

    Smoke Daddy info

We have a couple smoke chief smoke generator we picked up as manufacturers samples years ago. They work pretty well - huge smoke output, but you have to check them every half hour or so. They don't have the "cant get to light/stay lit" problems common with tubes/mazes. Its nice because it uses...

    New Guy From Wisconsin!

If you are just looking to sear/crisp up the steaks after smoking, consider putting them under the broiler in your kitchen. You can sear your steaks in just a couple of minutes and have much better control. yes, you can run the Traeger up hot enough to sear, but it takes a while to get hot...

    A-maze-n Smoker boxes

Another solution is to use a smoke generator like the smoke chief. www.smokehouseproducts.com/products/smoke-chief-cold-smoke-generator It is made to attach to the rotisserie hole on a gas grill and will put out a ton of smoke. Burns pellets, but has a little blower in it. I think they...

    Chicken On A Traeger

300 is OK. I use 350. Once you get a traeger above about 250, you aren't getting any real smoke flavor, so you are just trying to grill the chicken skin quickly before the meat dries out.

    Chicken On A Traeger

Chicken skin requires relatively high heat to crisp up (it has to render out and basically fry). I brine my chicken and put olive oil in my brine (so it picks up oil as I take it out of the brine bucket). If I don't have time to brine, I rub chicken with olive oil (helps the skin crisp...

Oh look, it's another new guy.

Hi Faarg, We own half a dozen smokers at any given time (long story). Mostly pellet burners, but we have had an electric masterbuilt for a lot of years. It was initially a disappointment - couldn't get enough smoke with the included smolder pan. I am assuming the propane unit is similar, but I...

    New Pit Boss

we picked up an upright 5 and an upright 7 earlier this month. WOW. Love them. SO much space! Easy to clean out, easy to change pellets. we did have a problem with the door on the 7 (turned out it was a bent hinge pin), but easily fixed. Other than that, no issues getting them to seal I love...

    Help me pick new smoker/grill

It depends on how hot you run. Higher temp=higher consumption. I don't think yoders use an unusual volume of pellets - but I have never seen anyone do a comparison of pellet consumption across smoker brands.

    Substitute For Camp Chef Pellets

If you are using an MES, take a look at their cold smoke attachment. It puts out a LOT of smoke and is easier to manage than the tray. I have an MES and I had all but retired it because of the poor smoke performance. I got a pellet maze (sample at a trade show), which works OK but struggled...

    Substitute For Camp Chef Pellets

To reply to your initial question - you can use pretty much any cooking pellet in any pellet grill. You will find differences in flavor and quality across brands, but I haven't found a brand that wouldn't work (and I have tried a lot - I go to trade shows regularly and collect samples to try...

looking at upgrading from the pit boss

If you liked your pit boss, take a look at the Louisiana smoker. It is from Dansons, the same guys who own pit boss. I really like their side burn system, which is much like the system used in a Yoder. (MUCH better than pit boss burn system, which is the same burn system as Traeger). Support...

    Help me pick new smoker/grill

Yoders are great. no issues, but pricey. For a lower priced unit, I personally like the Louisiana smoker. Very similar side burn system to the Yoder (vastly superior to the bottom burn system on the Traeger). We have had several in the family for a bunch of years. Another interesting lower...

    Silicone bucket liner

We just use quart paint cans on my Louisiana smoker, and gallon cans on the big one. They hold a LOT, and are disposable. I also like that I can put a lid on to keep the critters out. If a raccoon or skunk get in your grease bucket, it is a BIG mess.

Traeger timberline 850 with non Traeger pellets smoke...

Traeger pellets are wildly inconsistent. If I buy a variety of trager pellet in California, and you buy the same variety in Carolina, there is almost no chance we would have the same pellets. Traeger pellets are made regionally by a variety of manufacturers - whoever is cheapest. Some are alder...

Will a pellet smoker be my answer?

My Louisiana smoker (pellet burner) does just fine down at 170. If you run it low and slow, smoke is great. If you run it at 350, not much smoke because it is burning too clean. nature of pellet smokers. However, I wouldn't give it up. Hard to beat the convenience. We cook on it all the time for...

    Pellet smoker VS Bradley smoker?

Interesting. We have used it at least a hundred times and have had no creosote issues. I wonder whether it is maybe humidity? (high and dry in the rockies vs. MN?).

    Traeger Gourmet Blend Pellets

Traeger pellets are very inconsistent. Unless they have changed very recently, their pellets are made by different manufacturers in different regions, so some are made on an oak base, some on alder, different ratios, etc. They have not historically labelled the differences. Also, some of...
