Anyone have opinions on the type of intake vent for the firebox? going to use two 1" holes but not sure on slider vs. rotating. Need pros and cons
If I use a slider both holes will be parallel on the lower side of the firebox at the fire grate level.
If I use a rotater one hole will be towards...
Chimney is welded in, sticks into the chamber about 1-1/2" . Starting to look like a smoker! still things to do..
1. drill and weld in grease drain for reverse flow plate
DONE 2. weld in dam for end of reverse flow plate
3. hinges or liftoff door for cook chamber

Greetings Greg!! glad to have another SF Bay Area member! Good helpful folks here, but if you've been lurking you already know that! I see you brew beer, I like a bit of the homebrew myself - Sparge.
Dirtsailor, you would have got a kick outta watching me beat that slug out with a hammer! I finally got it out!! I killed my new drill though (the spindle developed a wobble causing broken drill bits). I really wanted to make a nice clean hole but this thing was starting to beat me. To be...
So I am resorting to techniques I have not used since I was a kid building go-carts to get this hole made for the chimney. The hole saw worked OK for getting through the actual side wall of the tank but where it is cutting vertically through the end of the tank the wall thickness is at least...
Eric, yeah I thought it would be cool to be able to do just a a single slab of ribs. I ended up using the reverse flow plate but as a single piece of steel acting as the top of the firebox. Check my build post for the update pics.

I made refrigerator pickles last year using a couple of my bhute's, I call them Electric Pickles,- they will light you up! they were really good! Also Bhute's are good for making just about anything have a real kick but do try a bite of a small pepper first, they have a very nice nutty flowery...
That jar reminds me of the Lucas Electronics Smoke Replacement Kit (mechanic joke). Almost ready to pick my first cukes, hopefully my first two bhut jolokias ripen up soon so I can try to make smoked Ghost Pepper pickles!
Edit; @jtnf -great minds...
Wanted to give a quick tip to other newbie welders, I had replaced my lens with a #10 cheap $4 plastic lens and was still having trouble seeing the edge/seam I was trying to weld. I went back and bought a $14
Gold plated glass #10 and it is a dramatic improvement in visibility- spend the extra...
Going to use a piece 10" x 2" I.D. x 3/16" piece of black pipe for the chimney which will stick 2" into the chamber. Seems a little overkill with the wall thickness but it was free so that's what I will be using, my only concern is the depth into the cook chamber, does 2 " seem like too much...
Dave, you mean like this? I was saving this cause I think I might sell them on ebay This is the first thing I made with my welder. I already have a few friends and family that want one. I have other designs.
