So I noticed today that the 60 gallon compressor tank I will be using has a 1 1/2" pipe running through the middle lengthwise. It is welded to the center of both end caps. I am worried if I cut the door first and then cut the pipe out it might distort the tank. I am not sure why the pipe is...
Welcome aboard SMF Seth! You don't have your location listed in your profile yet but it's funny to hear you describe Northern California as the "normal part", I live in Santa Cruz.
Thank you for that important piece of info Len, that is the kind of knowledge I was hoping to gain from this thread. I know all the info is out there on the internet and in the library but it's "figuring out what I need to learn".
Lem, the two sample pieces in pics the took me about 5 minutes with a ballpeen hammer but I will be practicing on cheaper sheet steel first. All the panels will have a hammered texture. The thing that keeps making me think this is a bad idea is on a sunny day it will be like staring at the sun...
Len, I scribbled this drawing a while back. I plan on doing the brass and copper in sections and then brazing them together and holding them on the tank with 1-1/2"x1/8" steel or brass banding bolted to the tank with bronze carriage bolts.
Smokejumper I was wondering if someone would see that potential problem. I work in the marine industry and can either use techniques to isolate the metals or if necessary bolt a sacraficial anode to the bottom. I do plan on painting/coating the tank before I add the copper/brass cladding.
I really like the way the stove legs are supported by the angle steel base, that worked out perfect. How high is the bottom of your cook chamber opening/ or how high is the door handle from the ground when it is fully open? Trying to get an idea of how tall to build my base. Looks really nice...
So I have been exploring ideas to make my 60 gallon smoker build unique before I start cutting. I would make the tank ends copper and the rest of the cook chamber including the door skinned in brass. I will be bolting the door flanges with polished bronze carriage bolts. I realize this is a...
Looking forward to seeing it painted and some Qview. How is it holding temps for you?, when I ran your numbers on the feldons pit calculator the chimney length came out to 7". Also wanted to ask how you went about cutting the 6" hole for the woodstove to tank.
Nice job!! what size is the outlet from the stove to the tank and what diameter and length is your chimney?
Are those two pieces of open ended square tube to mount a shelf?
I have been wanting to make this smoker build unique and have been playing with the idea of using hammered sheet copper and brass on the tank. I am going to practice some more on thin steel first. As I discovered when I built my mini from the scuba tank Shiny metal looks really cool but if you...
LOL saw the title and thought this was my thread!
Gonefishin I am also building a 60 gallon and using a woodstove
Really curious what your tank dimensions are and how big is your woodstove? Can't wait to see it! I'm not the most computer savvy guy but if you are still trying to figure out...
Bump... Dustin, could you post the dimensions of the firebox that you want to use?. Put up all the dimensions and most likely another member will be along shortly. I only have experience with making a firebox too small .
When I brought the stove home I stuck my angle grinder in through the door to see about cutting that deflector plate out, will have to do it one handed. I plan on leaving it in for the first burn because I am curious to see how much it will affect temps and air flow.
I have two back up plans...
Ribwizzard my firebox is round for this build, but I have been thinking about doing exactly what you described to my mini reverse flow. On my ScubaQ mini even though the numbers work in the calculator there is hardly enough room for 3-4 fist size chunks of wood and an ash drawer would help a...
Morning Dave, are you referring to RibWizzards posts? He is the cause of the constant popcorn shortage at my house! . Yes I read everything RW and yourself put up. Usually the cookchamber is the constant in a build but in my case I can't change the size of my firebox/woodstove. I thought...
