Reverse Flow worth the extra money (vs UDS)?

Great and thanks! If a UDS will taste just as good, I'd be thrilled. This'll be for just us (no competitions etc). Probably no more than 10-20 lbs of meat at a time.

Reverse Flow worth the extra money (vs UDS)?

Thanks! But Is there a taste benefit? I don't mind less capacity. I'm going to put a door on the UDS so I can add burning coals or charcoal much like a Weber Smokey Mountain.

Reverse Flow worth the extra money (vs UDS)?

Is the flavor and cooking quality much better than a UDS? I'm considering building one of these two. I have the tools (welder, saws, metal cutting, etc).

What am I looking for (burn/smoke status) to get a nice smoke flavor?

Thanks guys! The chicken quarters last night were great but the smoke only penetrated about 1/2" or so. I smoked them for 2-3 hours at low heat (200-250F) then fired it up to crisp the skin. When done the internal temp was 180F in the thickest part of the meat but there was still blood in some...

What am I looking for (burn/smoke status) to get a nice smoke flavor?

I don't have a smoker but I do have a wood stove (cat stove but with the cat bypassed so it's smoke goes straight up the flue). Today I put some bricks in the wood stove and a grill grate inside to try smoking some chicken quarters. Here's what I did: 1. Built a medium sized fire that kindled...

Best way to spend $200 or less on a Smoker? Good with tools. Have plenty of Firewood on hand. Mostly

It looks like a mini WSM costs around $100 to build. Not too bad. I wonder if there's an advantage or disadvantage to build a UDS? Seems like a little more cooking area and similar concept for around the same cost. A store in the area sells drums for $15 each. They're old Veg Oil drums and are...

Best way to spend $200 or less on a Smoker? Good with tools. Have plenty of Firewood on hand. Mostly

I did some research and I think the smoker the old downtown grocery store had was an Ole Hickory. Is there anything similar but on a small scale? These are $10k and more and way too big for our family. http://www.olehickorypits.com/Model-ELES/

Thanks for the recommendations. I'm still curious what that grocery store had and if there's anything on a smaller scale. It was a big silver box on wheels. There was an extension cord going to it and I'm not sure if there was also gas. It had an area where a log split was stuck into a door.

Best way to spend $200 or less on a Smoker? Good with tools. Have plenty of Firewood on hand. Mostly

Thanks to all for the suggestions. I'd read about UDS's a while back. A friend of mine's brother runs smokerbuilder.com that sells plans. I may have to pick his brain a bit on an UDS. I'm sure I could build it. Really there's enough out there on the internet that it should be easy. Hammerhead...

Best way to spend $200 or less on a Smoker? Good with tools. Have plenty of Firewood on hand. Mostly

I'd like to spend under $200 to get smoking. I had a Brinkman a while back (was a youngin at that point) and didn't have the patience to keep the charcoal fed every hour. I'm older and more patient now and would probably put up with it but it's gone now. I never used it and my wife sold it in...

Cap/Plates a common size on Harbor Freight Meat Grinder?

Thanks all! I called the main number and expressed some disappointment but since it's been a while (maybe 6 months since purchase), they wouldn't do anything about it. Really a bummer that a cap that probably cost .20 cents to make in China wastes $45. I guess the $45 was wasted when I gave HF...

Cap/Plates a common size on Harbor Freight Meat Grinder?

Sorry! By cap I mean the end cap that holds each grinding plate in place. It's screwed onto the nose where the product comes out after being ground.

Cap/Plates a common size on Harbor Freight Meat Grinder?

I've got one of these and it works ok but the low quality pot metal cap broke in two. HF doesn't have any parts for these unfortunately. Are these a common size (as in it'd be possible to order a new cap) or will there not likely be another 'generic' cap that will fit. I'd hate to have to buy...
