Aren't most MES vents on top right as you face it? ahhhh, I was thinking Gen 1, not Gen 2. Regarding a glass door, mine probably looks like tallbm's. Very coated. Mother Nature's natural insulation....
I replaced the old element in my big chief smoker with a element from a Proctor Silex counter top burner that is controlled by one of my Auber PIDs. Soooo awesome.

Welcome to SMF. Is your MES a model 30 or 40? If a 30, maybe this is the perfect time to upgrade to a larger (model 40) unit. If though you like the size of a 30, then I would go the PID route and yes if it's a 40, keep it and go PID. This thread has helped so many fellow smokers. You...
Sounds like you might have a Gen1 MES40. That's what I have. Got it as a curbside freebee. Dead controller, etc. Just hooked a new power cord directly to the element. This power cord is plugged into the Auber PID. The Auber temp sensor runs down the exhaust hole.
Since I don't use the...
Glad to see that the both of you folks seem to be on the way to a lot of smokin' There are a lot of Masterbuilt electric smoker owners here with lots of experience to share. Many of us have switched over to a separate smoke generator type of device and have never looked back. Don't...
If you are thinking about mounting a fan inside the smoker, think about how much smoke grime will stick to the blades of the fan. They will become very gooey in no time. Same problem with installing a fan outside on the exhaust vent.
Depending on ones definition of "regular power cord", I will say that I only use a heavy 14 gauge cord just like the one that Masterbuilt uses. I have had zero issues during the past 7 years of running it since the mod was completed. And also since this smoker is dedicated for fish so the...
Way back when, I removed the small cover plate that covers the connection to the element. Drilled a hole in the cover plate. Ran an extra power cord through the hole and connected the cord to the element. I now plug the other end of the cord into the Auber.
Doing this bypasses all of the...
Yes for Auber WS-1510ELPM. My 40 was a dead curbside freebee. With the help of tallbm and others here, I rewired it for the PID and it's been running perfectly for quite awhile now.
Our plastic cutting boards are getting pretty stained and need cleaning. What do you guys suggest? I googled it and found a bunch of suggestions but before I jump into it, thought I'd get your ideas first.
