I am with you on that most of the welds could be covered easy in one pass if prepped correctly.
That maybe fine n dandy to weld like that on a large gas line, but if you are building smokers comercially there is no way you are going to go to all that trouble to prep a weld area.

For me a 10x3" intake would be fine. Thats about the size I run on my double door vertical smokers.
I usually leave the cooking chamber door open when lighting the fire and once the fire gets going well close it.

Just don't buy one of those flux cored jobs from harbor freight no matter how inviting the price maybe. (think trying to weld using a sparkler)
