What have you gained from SMF?

As a newbie, I have recieved lots of help, tips, advice, etc., from people who really want me to succeed. Nothing is kept close to the vest as far as helping someone smoke meat properly. It is unusual to find a site where people aren't bashing one another constantly and every other word is a...

    Homemade Smoker!

I bought what I thought was a 5 pound roast, but after I took the netting off it was actually two separate roasts. I smoked them for almost ten hours and could not get the internal temp over 175. I chickened out and took them off, rested them for an hour and cut them open. They were good! I...

first smokie okie, and its important

Take a picture of that fire! I have failed at my first SmokieOkie attempt because my fire was too small. (I think)

    Homemade Smoker!

The propane burner is working well. I am on the maiden voyage right now! Two pork roasts and a packer brisket. I wanted to try it the SmokeyOkie way, but I underestimated the size of fire I would need to do that. Mine was too small and I thought it was going to start cooking instead of searing...

    Building my own.

Lookin' good! Did you use the router control, or find something else? I looked through the posts but couldn't find what you are using to control the current, and the dial in the picture is making me curious!

    Homemade Smoker!

Latest pics show the 2 inch frame welded around the perimeter of the hole I cut. I then welded 1/2 square tubing to the piece I cut out that will fit inside that frame. I hope that will seal better than just trying to close it. This was all before I had my pouting fit yesterday!

    Homemade Smoker!

Thanks for all the encouragement! I was really down last night, and I guess I just had to pout a little. I aint givin up yet. After thinking about it all day, I decided to give propane a try. I just don't think I will ever get enough heat out of an electric element at 110 volts. This box is...

    Homemade Smoker!

Wow, you guys lost me. I am pretty disgusted with the whole project. I am not smart enough to get an element that will produce enough heat. The one I bought off e-bay got the smoker up to a whopping 160 degrees. I thought seriously about going with a propane burner when I ran accross a...

    Homemade Smoker!

I'm not going to have everything I need to get it done this weekend, but I may try a smoke with the skillet like you folks are talking about. At least then I can try it out. Any suggestions on sealing the door?

    Homemade Smoker!

The employees would put the receipts and cash in a bag and "drop" them into this contraption. The owner would open it the next day and take out the loot. Great ideas chadpole, I was thinking along those same lines to catch the drippings, but I hadn't got that specific. THANKS! Thanks for the...

    Homemade Smoker!

I have been messing around trying to get a smoker to work for some time, and this is my latest idea. Any input would be welcome! My friend bought this thing on an auction. It was a homemade drop box for a large dance hall. He got it for 5 bucks, and thought I could use it to make a smoker...

    Homemade Smoker Woes

Thanks for the info everyone! The rheostat is made for a soldering iron rated at 1500 watts, so I thought it would work well. I was afraid of stovetop elements because I thought they were 220 volts, am I wrong about that? The replacement burners for Brinkman and others have no control, and I...

    Homemade Smoker Woes

I need Help! Everytime I try to smoke something, my burner stops working. I have bought several hot plates, and they all do the same thing, get hot and melt! Usually the wires under the burner get too hot and melt, or the thermostat never shuts off and the plate gets too hot. I thought I...
