The one time I smoked for a large group, I was asked for a brisket and pulled pork. I ended up doing 4 pork butts and they just had a little leftover. I had to smoke it separately on the Akorn. I vacuum packed them and used a sous vide cooker to heat it back up once it was time. Nobody knew the...
Of course I’ve changed my mind again. I decided that the Woodwind and SG are too small. One time I was asked to cater a graduation party, so I want to have as big a smoke area as possible. So it’s either the Rec Tec RT-700 or the SmokePro SGX. Trying to decide if stainless and a better...
Now I’m torn between the Woodwind and the SmokePro SG. Adding the sear box to the SG would put it at $50 more than the Woodwind, and I’d have to buy a cover. But it would likely be a better grill.
The sear box on the Woodwind seems like a neat idea, but I generally use a cast iron pan to really sear. If the Woodwind would get hot enough to grill stuff like pork chops and burgers, that’s good enough for me.
I know this is the pellet smoker forum, so the answers may be a bit skewed.
I was really thinking about getting an electric smoker, but I’ve started leaning towards a pellet smoker the more I’ve read. I think what’s going to make the difference for me is how well pellet smokers work as a grill...
Hey guys,
I’m about 99% decided that I’m going to buy a Smokin-It smoker soon. I’ve been using a Chargiller Akorn for a few years, and a cheap offset smoker before that. I do have a couple of questions:
1) Size - I’m not sure between the 2D and 3D. For anyone that has the 2D, how many racks of...
I used high temp silicone for the seal at the bottom to empty the ashes (from Amazon) and Lavalock gasket (from eBay) for the lid. The silicone eventually burned and flaked off, so I tried Lavalock and it burned too. It leaks a little still, but not a big deal.
The grate was from...
I don’t disagree that charcoal/wood can be easy and smoke better than an electric or pellet smoker. But I already pretty much have that setup - a Chargiller Akorn and a HeaterMeter. I guess I just want something even easier to use than that, with no charcoal to deal with.
I don’t need it to do anything except smoke. Even though I haven’t used it for BBQ, I still use the kamado for grilling on a somewhat regular basis. So burgers, steaks, and chops are good to go. Just missing brisket and ribs.
With some sealing, it works great. I ended up replacing the grate with a stainless one. I use a HeaterMeter with mine, so a Flame Boss should work fine. I’ve used mine extensively, and my brother’s Big Green Egg a good bit. The Akorn is about 90% as good as the BGE in my opinion.
Hey guys,
I’ve been BBQing for 5 or 6 years. Currently I have a kamado, and before that I used an upright smoker. I’m looking for a simpler setup. My job takes up a lot of time, and now that I have kids I don’t find myself making the time to make BBQ. I’ve pretty much decided on an electric or...
