    Fire box

Follow the RF tutorial above, you can't go wrong.  You need somewhere between 14,000 - 16,000 cubic inches which works out roughly to a 25" cube.  Take your time on the design and get it right, a good design improves performance and fuel efficiency making it easier to operate which means you...

Finally! FAST FOOD worth writing about!!!!

Jimmy, you inspired me.  I had to stop and get one while I was out today, it was the best thing going in fast food.  I too didn't get a pic, I ate it way too quick.  I bought a small pork belly at Sam's a week or so ago (first time I have seen them there), I was planning on making burnt ends out...

200 Gallon Oval Oil Tank Reverse Flow Smoker Build - 55 Gallon Drum Firebox

Fired up the rig for 1st time, held temp with very little fuel!   I didn’t even try to maintain a specific temp, was testing the RF plate to see if it would warp before I install the castable refractory base on top (it didn’t) while I installed handles and the counterweight on the top door.  ...

Advice on what to use as a exhaust pipe

I went with 6" stove pipe. I'm still building it, so I can't really tell you how it worked out yet. I looked at exhaust pipes too, but cost and being able to remove the top section during transport tipped it to stove pipe. Good luck with your build, I am watching all of the current rf builds...

200 Gallon Oval Oil Tank Reverse Flow Smoker Build - 55 Gallon Drum Firebox

Question on the charcoal basket, my firebox door is only 9x12 inches (pics above). That's pretty small. I do have the option of making it long though. I haven't found anything on the forums on how to size a basket, I figured I should make it as big as I can as long as it fits through the...

    Gday from NZ

Welcome aboard Mike! I had the freshest, best meat of my life in New Zealand. Lamb, venison, beef and shrimp all on served raw on the same 1500 F volcanic rock was by far the best lunch I ever had. Got to cook each bite to perfection. It must be a wonderful place to bbq. Jump right in on a...

    NEED ADVICE

I kept my oil tank verticle, i have plenty of rack space. As far as cleaning goes, I didn't burn my oil tank out. However, it had been empty for a few decades and when I finally cut doors in (after welding the firebox on) I did find a thin layer of dried residue and a lot of rust. I used an...

200 Gallon Oval Oil Tank Reverse Flow Smoker Build - 55 Gallon Drum Firebox

Here is the plan, I finally got the RF plate welded in place (weather has not been cooperating) and a 1 ½ inch drain pipe per the photo below.  Wait a minute you say, why is the drain sticking out above the plate like that?   Here’s the story:   The RF plate I scored at the recycle center is...

200 Gallon Oval Oil Tank Reverse Flow Smoker Build - 55 Gallon Drum Firebox

Was discussing the hassle with the door gaps elsewhere, so I wanted to post a pic of the door braced back on this thread too.  I put a scrap piece of angle across and used the pipe clamp to evenly reshape it.  I got the idea off a welding website, they actually welded large bolts to the top and...

    260 Gal Build

Here is a pic of the door braced.  I put a scrap piece of angle across and used the pipe clamp to evenly reshape it.  I got the idea off a welding website, they actually welded large bolts to the top and bottom of the door and put all thread through it but I didn't have anything like that (I am...

    260 Gal Build

Ron, I posted a pic on my ongoing reverse flow thread on how I pulled my doors back into shape. I tried several things including using a pipe clamp to bend it back into shape, heating it, then spritzing the inside with water to cool it faster than the outside. That fixed about 2-3" of the gap...

200 Gallon Oval Oil Tank Reverse Flow Smoker Build - 55 Gallon Drum Firebox

Spent ~20 hours on the top door over the last few days, but its on there and working as intended.   I tried every trick I could find on SMF and Welding Web to get it back into the original shape of the tank (some twice), in the end I feel like I cheated by welding reinforcing rods to keep it in...

    260 Gal Build

Ron, I feel your pain on the door tweak.  I spent ~20 hours working on the top door to my RF build over the last 3 days.  Mine sprung a good 4-5 inches when I cut it.  Its now done and I am not sure I would recommend what I did (and I have an oval tank anyway), I am hoping you get some detailed...
