Thanks Bamaboy, it will be trailer mounted. That was only about 30 pounds of pressure but the temp in the reactor was 285F so it looks a lot meaner than it was.
Tom, I used 309L on the carbon to stainless. I always run a root pass of 5-p then cap it with lo-hy on the carbon to carbon. I like...
I started adding some reinforcement to the firebox. I have a bunch of 3" c-channel I am using for this, it isn't pretty but should hold everything in place when I weld out the rest of the box. I also got busy with the cleaning of the upright portion of the smoker. I think it came from an...
That's cool, I have heard of these things running in cold temps forever and holding the heat. One of the benefits of insulating it for me is I don't have to paint it. The insulation would be wrapped up in aluminum sheeting secured with bands of stainless flat stock and a corrugated lid cover. I...
I have seen the grates they sell and quite frankly found them to be a little cheesy. I'm not bashing anyone's gear here but I like to do stuff one time. I have a New Braunfels smoker I bought years ago and have been modifying it since. The wire grate was the first thing to die a horrible death...
Your firebox is plenty big, better than too small. According to the calculator you need;
17" x 8" rectangle firebox to main cook chamber opening
4, 4" rectangle firebox air inlets
A 69" stack at 4" i.d.
These #s change if you go from rectangular to circular as well as stack length depending...
It sure won't warp but you may have some sealing issues depending how you mount it. If the six inch air inlet is proportionate to your pit's ratios, it should be fine and look good too.
Tom, I really like your smoker. You are doing a lot of work there and it will all pay off when it is done. If you are like me though, it will never be done. Are you welding that with an A.C. machine? Those uphills look pretty dang good to me.
I have been checking out these U.D.S. units for some time now and I gotta have one. First, I was thinking of building the fire grate with legs and attach an ash pan to the bottom. Second, I was thinking of making the cooking grates stackable. I think this would yield a little larger cooking...
I have a bad habit of over thinking things and have to stop and remind myself it's not a Rolex, it's a pit. I would think the length would be fine. A 28" length of pipe is 28" long be it on top of or into the smoke chamber. The theory behind dropping the stack to grate level is to draw your...
I think it's better to have a larger firebox as opposed to one undersized. If it is too small it will be a fuel hog, larger than necessary and you will always have reserve heat if you need it.
The length of the stacks is pretty important to insure proper draw from the firebox inlets through the...
Thanks Tom, yes I grew up around pipeline. My family's business was a natural gas pipeline service Kansas when I was a kid. My first job was at 15 hot doping joints for underground. I think the box of 5-p finding it's way to your house is a good idea. Stick welding is way cooler than mig...
Okay, one more for tonight.......... I cut the end caps out of 1/4" plate and tacked them up to reduce the distortion from cutting the doors. Here it is with caps taked and doors cut. I cut the corners first then ran a short bead of p-5 to tack them back before I cut the long runs. This keeps...
