    Thanks guys for the replies.  On the similar build, the existing vent was scrapped for a more traditional vent, then later to find out that it may not have been the problem.  Here's a couple more pics I took.  This one is a pic of the vent on the outside. This is a pic of the inside top...

    Test for my project

    Hey from North Carolina

    You guys have a great site.  I've learned so much just reading here, and don't even have a smoker yet!   Living in eastern NC I've cooked lots of pigs with charcoal & lp, but not much in the way of wood smoking.  But the first time I threw some wood chips on my charcoal grill.... wow that smell...
