I have heard many things about galvanized stuff, and have read a lot about it in the process of building my new smoker, and I guess my advice would be not to risk it. If you go to any steel shop, they would probably sell you some scrap pieces that would work fine for dirt cheap. I made a smoke...
You two have really helped me a lot out here too, both with recipes, and building tips. Thanks for the kudos. I am just burning to go back to wisconsin, where the smoker is living now (until it is done), and finish it and make that first batch. Once we have a successful run at it, I'm making...
Hi All,
Haven't posted here in a while. I've had my hands full with my latest creation. Since the minnesota winters are brutal, i decided that i needed to upgrade my little chief to something that would be more of a year round machine. So, i decided to try my hand a building a fridge...
Hi Mulepackin, I see that you have a smoke daddy on the side of your smoker. Is the purpose of that primarily for cold smoking?? Would it work to have that as the only source for your smoke?? I am not familiar with the smoke daddies or how they work othere than they say you can light the...
Thanks for the help setitandforgetitsmoker. I'm not sure that i really want to run 240 out to where i will need to plug it in. The only place i even have a hookup is for the range in the house (i have a gas dryer). I'm still a newbie, and that will be a great idea for maybe my NEXT smoker...
Thanks so much guys. I will be starting a thread in a week or two when i get this smoker started I actually am going to look at an old fridge to do this in later this week, and will post pics of the progress. :)
I couldn't do it without you guys. Thanks again.
Hi All,
I am looking to put together a PID for a smoker i want to build, and need some advice as to whether this will work for me.
Here is the link to the how to guide i found:
http://www.susanminor.org/forums/showthread.php?t=315
My question is will a 25 Amp relay handle the 1500 watt...
OMG, that is an awesome idea. Might be a good idea to put another piece of pipe on that and get it out past the eves. I think that vent might stain your siding.
Anyhow, i'm really jealous. It is 15 degress here in Minnesota right now, and that would certainly make smoking a lot more...
Is this the PID unit that you are talking about when you are saying that you have an auber unit??
http://www.auberins.com/index.php?ma...products_id=72
Do any of you use this unit?? I'm not much of an electronics guy, but this seems to be a plug and play unit that could be used to control a...
Mulepackin, I am looking to build a similar unit to the one that you have. I am trying to figure out how to make a unit that i can concievably hot and cold smoke with. Is your smoker capable of doing both?? Originally, I was going to just get a PID and a brinkman element and be done with it...
I was thinking the same thing. :)
Thanks for the info smoking_snow. and yes, let me see what kind of element you have when you get a minute. After the salmon smoke of course. :) Thanks again for your help.
thanks for the info. I really appreciate your responses.
The temperature gets up to about a max of 160 in warm weather with no insulation. I made an insulator wrap out of some material called reflectix, and i can get it up to about 180 with that. The problem is that in the cold minnesota...
Hi OklahomaJoe,
for the thermometer, I use an el cheapo weber digital remote thermometer. It is a little finicky and goes through batteries pretty quickly. I normally have to change them in the sending unit about once per smoke. Since i am rather new to this as well, I haven't invested in a...
Hi All,
I was wondering if anyone knows if the elements from the big chief will fit in the little chief?? I am going to be buying or making a bigger smoker in the next few months, and I was thinking of taking this up to the lake to have up there. I think it would be a much more effective...
