I never got acquainted with slow smoke or BBQ until late in my life when I bought an old 22" Weber charcoal grill for $10. Later bought a 'Smokenator'. Never got to use it. When I was out of the country my wife donated the grill since she had never seen me use it. The Smokenator went with it, of course. Then one day I visited a link to a man who did a fancy mod to an ECB vertical barrel smoker and his photos made a big impact on me. So, I bought an ECB smoker and modified it. Lots of frustration, but I got it to work wonderfully. Now it is on to a ECB two door cabinet smoker and if I get frustrated moding it I will quit the charcoal business and buy a Master Forge electric smoker. Hate to admit that. But I am getting old.
