I just ran across this on kickstarter today and it looks pretty cool. I'm always getting into trouble with the wires on my mavericks... it would be nice to have a wireless one so that I can flip the meat if I want and not have to worry about where the wires are when moving meat around or trying...
I watched a special on one of those DIY, HGTV, or discovery channels about building a pizza oven outside. Made me want to make one in my back yard =) They used a round metal frame, insulated it, and then used fire bricks and stucco to make it look pretty.
I tried a soup can with some holes drilled in it and foil on top. The pellets were all black at the end of the smoke, but there was no ash. I thought it just wasn't getting enough air, so I tossed some pellets on top of the foil as a test on my second try... those came out the same. Black...
My old smokey joe has been in mothball status for years unless I am wanting to cook some hot dogs for the kiddo's at the beach in the summer. I think I'll have to convert it into a smoker and then smoke stuff at the lake or at home when I don't feel like I need to fire up the bigger smoker =)...
Yeah, there was a good 6 inches of snow on the ground the day of the smoke. No moisture in the air due to temps and the desert climate I live in... Next time I'm going to light a few briquettes in a soup can to get the temp up to a more reasonable level. Hopefully this will give the smoker...
Well, last weekend I took a hammer to the firebox and ripped out the bottom layer of blocks so that I have more room in there. It was only about 10-12 inches tall and a pain to reload when the charcoal started getting low. Now I have it laid out so that there is almost a 2 foot high opening...
I tried to smoke some cheese about a month ago in my behemoth of a vertical smoker. At the time it was about 10 degrees F out and I was using the 12 inch amazin tube smoker. I loaded it up and got the pellets good and hot and then went back to the game. A couple hours later I went to check on...
Well, I fired it up a couple times before Turkey Day and tried to dry out the wood. The wood was so wet when I was cutting it that I could see the water oozing out around the cuts. I had a hard time getting the temp up over 275, but on Turkey Day it magically (probably finally dried out the...
Got some more work done on the smoker this weekend. Finished the majority of it. All that's left is a few trim pieces here and there and the firebox door...
I cut 4 racks and made a new charcoal box out of a sheet of 3/4 inch expanded metal. That stuff is a pain in the butt to cut with a jig...
Thanks Wes. I can only cut out the bottom of the firebox for more room. That cap was three 80 pound bags of cement... No way I'm moving it without breaking it up. With how it looks though it might break up on its own. The bottom has a real gravel like consistency so the heat may cause the...
I was planning on drilling a smallish 1/2" to 1" hole into the chimney at the top of the chamber to give the smoke somewhere to go without letting out too much of the heat. Just haven't got that far yet.. Still trying to decide how many racks to put in there and how far apart to put them..
