saw one @ Home Depot the "farmer" built much like the other tin can off sets. Your right at the price range of the Old Country Pits Pecos, drop a few more bucks and you will have the Wrangler.
You will not break the bank out of the gate to spend a few dollars on a quality thermometer. Your entitled to your opinion. You spend what you feel, but for "me" I will stick with Tel Tru for the notoriety, reliability in accuracy for back yard & competitive bbq circuit pits.

personally I am not fond of pellet cookers (I call them set it & for get it). I own traditional stick burners, that's what "I" prefer & I was taught on & use here at my home & take to my church functions. I feel you can not learn good BBQ skills from a pellet cooker, that just my feeling on it...
