Thanks for the ideas, Swede. I was thinking about a gas flame, but had a bigger one in mind. The small one would probably have less tendency to get things too hot, though. Wonder how long they burn. I'm also thinking about putting a small smoker in a hole or box to protect it from the rain and...
Thanks don.
I should have mentioned that there's no electricity near where the smoker will stand. Wondering if I should start looking at a weather-protected slow-burning wood-burner, and pipe some heat and smoke into the smokehouse that way, maybe still use the AMNPS for consistency and volume...
I'm thinking about turning a broken MES into a cold-smoker for bacon, sausage etc., using an AMNPS for smoke.
I've read that people like to smoke at 80 -90 degrees. Now that the outdoor temperature is in the high 30s, does anyone have a suggestion as to how to get the MES up to that temperature...

Neat job. I'm really looking forward to getting my SHES to actually smoke stuff.
Are those two thermometers on the left side of the smoker? What kind are they, and do they work well?
How did you make the handles on the disk? How do they attach?
Thanks again for the pix.

Thanks Geerock. I've read references to PIDs, but haven't figured out what they are yet. I found this
Old Smokey Electric Smoker Replacement Heating Element
and this
Old Smokey Electric Smoker Replacement Thermostat & Cord
on Amazon, and thought they might work. The element is rated at 1500...
Would there be anything wrong with removing the rack above the element and resting a piece of sheet metal directly on the element? Would that create a short, maybe?
Mine also can't keep the chips going at 225 -250--according to the built in thermometer, anyway. This thing probably needs a new...
Would you recommend cutting a hole in the roof of the smoker and installing a butterfly vent?
Or just drilling a couple of holes in the side wall at or below the level of the element?
JSD:
None of the things you mentioned. It happened a while ago, and has been moved and re-plugged a few times.
I looked at several of the posts on the problem, and the fixes are a little complex for me. I've pretty much given up on Masterbuilt, but if I can find a new element with some kind...
It does nothing. None of the controller lights go on. And I don't think there's a red power light anywhere.
I'm going to try and find the repair posts.
