    Wind is a big factor, but the insulation keeps the fuel use down. I've done comps at 35 degrees w/o any insulation, just more attention and fuel.

    I use lump. so I don't have much ash. Otherwise, yes, you need to remove the ash from time to time. Not familiar with your cooker, so I don't know the firebox set up.     A few tips. Until you get it seasoned, it will be hard to hold a constant temp and also a low temp. Don't trust lid thermometer, not accurate.
