    Outdoor Gourmet Electric Smoker

I think they are a Chinese company...low end stuff historically. I remember the Omaha grill brand mentioned here http://bbq.about.com/od/grills/a/aa040805a_2.htm But I have completely gutted and rebuilt a first Gen mes40, so probably I'm not the best judge of quality.

    MES40 Lack of Smoke

I have been fighting the urge to order one of these since I happened upon this site...today TJ wins my money too

    Help with modding a MES 40" 20070408

That sounds nice...Sounds like we're looking for a concave ceramic tile, preferably self levitating so we don't have to add another shelf over the element.

    Help with modding a MES 40" 20070408

I was thinking of something like that, the inside right now is completely factory.  Thanks for the advice

    Help with modding a MES 40" 20070408

I did some ribs yesterday to test out my work.  Although they turned out really good I think there is a pretty large temperature gradient between the top and the bottom of my smoker.  Especially when that element kicks on, the bottom gets pretty hot before the top gets warm enough to trip the...

    Help with modding a MES 40" 20070408

I got the element in and put everything back together today.  It is burning well now...just have to wait and see how well it regulates temp with the higher wattage element.

Master Forge EBC1102L question (Red Bullet)

I have an older model of this smoker without the "thermostat", so it is always full blast.  The internal temp on mine runs around 240-260(depending on the outside temp) when it has been running with the lid on for a few hours(I'm not sure of the wattage on mine).  So no, I am not surprised it...

Unfortunately, the element is back ordered for a month and there is not a lot remaining to do until it arrives.  Possibly in the mean time I should give BadBob's project a shot

MES 30 modification... I think it's the final mod....

It depends on the outside conditions and stuff like that...probably once you get used to it you can get very close to an equilibrium for any given conditions.  It's like setting a faucet to keep the water level constant in a bucket with a hole in it.  After a little tweaking you will get it very...

MES 30 modification... I think it's the final mod....

Just because you guys brought it up... A "dimmer" is how a PID controller works for a heating element as well.  When you only have on and off, your temperature looks like a sine wave with your setpoint in the center.  What Dave is doing with his dimmer is reducing the magnitude of that wave, so...

DaveOmak, I believe you are right...you could call it a thermostat too I guess.  Probably has a low and a high temp that it opens at.  If it is cold and the MES isn't working, you could hit it with a hair dryer and see if that is the cause.  I guess I could put it in my fridge and then test it...
