This acts like a baffle. It brings the heat along the grill part. I also line the bbq with foil to increase the heat. be sure that the ash tray is tightly pressed against the wall where the SFB is.
So then I'm guessing the smoke actually comes out the gab in the front and back vs the end? So you're saying it distributes the heat to evenly spread it through the whole cooking chamber?
