It works well.I use cheap hand sanitizer. It's 70% alcohol and a lot cheaper than gel fuel.
Great idea! I'll give it a try.

I know what you mean when you've been outside for awhile ice fishing and try to light a Zippo lighter. Butane and propane only work well. I had hurricane lanterns with smokeless paraffin and it would gel in a few minutes. If the fuels are room temp they should light fine in the cold if lit when still warm. It's the darn cold and wind.I don't know how ISO alcohol lights in the winter cold either. I know camping fuel has issues sometimes nice fishing it won't light until you can get it warmed up a little.
I need to try this. Any type of sanitizer (Purell etc)? Doesnt the wind blow it out?
Update - I've been using AK1's idea with the hand sanitizer and I will never go back to the torch. This is so freakin easy - it takes 5 seconds. 3 or 4 squirts on top of the pellets, touch it with a lighter or match and walk away for 5 or 10 minutes. It gets a great cherry going. I always had to hold the torch on them until they were going ok and sometimes had to relight them with the torch - never have those problems again.
