I'm thinking about buying a Lang smoker but I hear the paint comes off the firebox and Lang's site says thats just what happens.   Seems like I've read somewhere a while back that you can paint or powdercoat a smoker where it wont come off.  Can you guys that build smokers give me any input on this?

Thanks a lot!

I used Rustoleum 1000 degree high heat paint and my firebox has shown zero sign of paint falling off.

I used cooking oil on my last firebox but then the other night I read that regular cooking oil will go rancid and put off a foul odor. I plan to burn off whats on there now and redo it with coconut oil.

It looks almost as black as the cook chamber that I painted with the 1000 degree paint.

I used Rustoleum 2000 degree high heat paint, Autozone part number 248903.

So far it's holding up really well. Just remember that it will only stick as good as what you put it over... in other words, if you put it over the old loose paint it will come off too. I sandblasted my firebox to get all the loose old paint off first then used the Rustoleum 2000 degree paint. I had a very hot fire in there today and it still looks like new.

Yea any good hardware store should have high temp paint. Some are higher than others so make sure you read the bottle. You might have trouble finding lots of colors but if you are looking for black, grey they are usually there.

Why does the Lang smoker website say the paint will come off.  Implying that thats just the way it is with smokers.

Try the stuff the company that marks for buried utility lines, them bastards spray painted my driveway, that stuff would not come off, I had to reseal my driveway.

HaHaHa. I feel your pain. I work for one of those utilities companys who has to mark their equipment. The paint may stay on pavement but it isn't high temp. I shouldn't laugh but yea you are right that stuff stays on the pavement for a long time. Nice for us but not nice for a home owner. Normally we won't paint on a private driveway etc. unless we have to  just for that reason.
