Ribs for sale on Mom's Day... good idea or not?

Was thinking of firing up the 'Stacks' and doing some baby-backs this weekend then remembered it was Mother's Day.

It's just me and the wife and no real plans for Mom's Day so I was thinking of doing a bunch of 'racks' and selling them right from my smoker. Our neighborhood is quite big and I get a lot of traffic going by the front of my house. Big Catholic community so I'm sure if I made a sign up and had ribs ready to go by noon I might get a few takers...

Just wondering what I'd charge??

Some of the locals that sell ribs from 'lots' sell St. Louis style size for about $19/full rack if I'm not mistaken...

I know a lot of families probably have planed their meals out already, I'm thinking I be catching last minute buyers or just someone wanting to show up with something unique and extra for their Mom's day Lunch... or supper even.

What do you guys think??

Don't know about where you live, but here you have to have a food handlers license and a vendor one to in order to sell food. I would check on that before buying anything

Yeah, I was thinking there would probably be some legal thing... You could probably give 'em away if you're feeling generous

I was thinking of a couple of things. First, what RdKnB & Kaiser said. Don't jeapordize your freedom or a ticket to make a few bucks. Now, having said that, if you can do it & get away with it, then make sure that you get "YOUR" money's worth for the effort of work that you are going to put in. Remember it is the little lady's day & she might be offended that you thought about the masses before you thought about her. (Oh, that was the second thing.)

Good luck.

NO, it was the wife's idea!!

Anyway, I don't think I need anything more than what I already have, as far as license goes but I'll make a phone call today...

My Q was how much do you guys think I can charge per rack???

If it's legal.. put your sign up today saying they will be available for $18...Again, if it's legal. HTH

I'd do what Corn Cob said. Put your sign up now, if you haven't already, and put your phone number on it telling your prospective customers to call and reserve their Mother's Day ribs. That way you'd know how much you're going to sell/smoke and when you reach your max, take your sign down. It also would enable you to sell the ribs without drawing a lot of attention to what you're doing, though I would still call and check out what you'd need to be legal. And, probably a good benefit is you wouldn't be tied up all day and would have more time with wifey! icon_confused.gif

Good Luck!

Well, since we have lift off Houston, I would say $21 - $25 if the other guys are going $19. I don't know how much profit you are trying to make, if any. If you are doing it just for giggles & grins, then just charge what you paid for the racks initially. Have fun with it.

Yeah, man, if you're legal to sell I'd go for $20/rack -- it's a nice, round number. I just bought 2 racks of takeout from a local restaurant here last weekend and paid $40 after the tip (well, she was cute). So, I think that $20/rack would be good especially if you got them at a good price ($6-$8 or less). You could probably get away with $25, too.

I like the "putting up the sign early for pre-orders" idea, too.

Good luck!

WELL, the 'Pre-Order' Sign is the best idea for sure...

Even a craigslist AD for pre-orders would have also been a great idea. That way I am NOT peddling the product right off my street...

DAM, I wish I wouldn't have been so busy these last few days and would have thought of this method a week ago...

I also forgot to call the city and the county, even tho I have friends in 'high' places locally and am licensed, I'll wait till the NEXT Holiday and do it then. (Memorial Day PDT_Armataz_01_34.gif)

NO, I'm not trying to break the bank on this but if I'm firing up the smoker anyway, what a GREAT way to subsidize the cost of my meat and time!!!

THNX again guys, the 'pre-order' idea is the best...
