you still have to let some heat and smoke into the cooking chamber. When you shut off the dampers fully you will be suprised on how much heat it will cut down on, going into the cooking chamber.

wouldnt you want a total off to throw on fresh wood??

my thoughts would be no. You take the chance of the temp falling in your cooking chamber if it was to be closed off complety. I have a Lang, that is a reverse flow and the is no damper between firebox and the cooking grill, only a damper in the flue, and dampers in the fire box, you have to have a way for air to flow through the entire smoker.

Are you talking about the double offset smoker that you are building?

You could do a insulated fire box and upper barrel, at the time, i didnt have much money to play with at the time i was building it, if you could find a way to get it around the inside of the barrel, yes i think it would work.

It looks like you have the basic design going good, they are fun to cook on, and also a challenge, i have had my Lang now for about 2 weeks, and im not sure if i will ever cook on the barrel smoker again. Im going to take the volg's kit and build another double barrel unit, but this time it will be air tight, only openings in the door and flue, and i will use it as a shop heater, with the vent stubbing out the side wall of my shop.

LOLOL i ta am runnin low budget !!! why i coped the flues to fit and doors are gonna be metal the less$$$ the better
