New UDS Build

After reading all the threads about Ugly Drum Smokers, I figured I could build one really cheap.I got the drum free from work, had the Weber lid, grill & and all hardware already at home. Spent $5 on the expanded steel for the charcoal basket and $9 on paint.
Total build cost $14

Hardware installed and burning the drum. I did two burns just to be on the safe side.

The inside all cleaned up after the burns.

All done and painted.

Cant wait to use it. I'm smoking ribs tomorrow.PDT_Armataz_01_12.gif

Yes nice lookin drum and price tag ... just one question tho ... hows the rust build up on the inside after sanding it down ? I was always told never to paint the inside which it doesnt look like u did but I know that type of metal after being sanded starts to rust in about a half n hour, I did two burns and a charcoal burn so the inside would just be seasoned.

Just wondering about the rust ?

Love that price tag !!

I did two burns and then hosed out all the ash. It took about a half hour to completely dry in the sun and was covered in a light surface rust. I sanded out all the rust from the inside and coated it with vegetable oil. The next day I re oiled the inside and did my seasoning burn. Next day sanded the rust off the outside and painted it with 1200* BBQ paint. So far no more rust. I'm Planning on keeping the inside a little oily in hopes of preventing any future rusting.
Thanks for all the comments! Cant wait to use it!!PDT_Armataz_01_12.gif

Looking good! You are going to really love that drum! With the Weber lid you could also add another rack on top down the road if you wanted. Nice Job!points.gif

Ribs turned out great. Cant believe how easy the temp was to control & extremely fuel efficient. Doubt I'll ever use the electric Char Broil smoker again. Thanks to everyone for all the info provided here!!icon_mrgreen.gif

Heres some pics of the finished product. I'll post more in the pork section later.
