Safe drum for UDS Build?

I found two drums that I can have, on contained non-chlorinated brake cleaner and the other contained Sunoco Race Fuel, I am guessing that is a high octane gasoline. Can either one of these be burned out successfully? The gasoline one was in better shape, could that be burned out and cleaned okay? Also the lids on all of these are sealed type, is there any way to pop the lids off and use them as the UDS lid? I do have a dome lid that I plan on using but just wondering if I can use either.

You will definitely need to burn them!! They may have a liner that will need to be removed as well. Some machine shops have drum head pullers. If you are going to cut those at all be sure there are no fumes built up! I don't think I need to explain that onebiggrin.gif

Not sure if anyone here has the backround to say for sure.

Both of those drums contained lethal chemicals. Which is bad enough. Burning doesn't clean out a lot of chemicals, and my blue collar brain wonders if fire would act as a catylist for the chemicals to change into something more noxious.

What about carcinogens? Is a face mask enough to stop them when you grind out the drum after the burn?

Those 2 drums would not even get consideration at casa bigsteve.

I honestly don't know the answer but personally I'd pass on using either of them. It just wouldn't be worth taking any chances to me

What they said. I know it's frustrating trying to find a drum, but I'd keep looking at least a little bit longer.

Go ta yer local newspaper er printer, should be able ta buy a open head barrel from them that contained soy ink, it'll be lined, but with a weed burner torch, that liner will come out after a couple a burns then a quick clean up with a wire wheel in a angle grinder.

Niether one a them drums is worth takin a chance on in my opinion.

That would be a big hell no! Ya might just go and blow yourself up even drilling a hole through those.

The 'lethal' chemicals you refer to are PAHs, byproducts of incomplete combustion. I test for those occassionally in drinking water as part of my job. Here's the skinny: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polycyc...ic_hydrocarbon

He's also working in the street, without one of those reflective triangles set out. This guy is reckless.

Good news, I found a drum that contained Honey, the owner of the local bakery said she would just give it to me. It is still a sealed type, but I found a dome lid from a kettle knock off in a dumpster that will fit it perfectly.
Now I just have a few questions, if there is a liner should I just burn a hot fire to get rid of it? If there is no liner can I just clean the inside out w/ a wire brush and go to town? Or do I need to sand/strip the entire thing an paint with high temp paint?
WoHoo I am jacked I cant wait to start workin on this thing!

Ifin its got a liner in it, I'm guessin it will, yer gonna have ta get a couple a rip roarin hot fires goin in that drum an then a wire wheel in a angle grinder. Ifin yer fire in the drum be hot enough, there won't be no paint left on the outside!

Couple a coats a bbq paint an yer good ta go.

I used a 5 million Btu turbo weed burner on mine, anythin in there that was gonna burn did, anythin left sure ain't gonna hurt nothin cause that drum will never get that hot again!

Ifin it ain't lined, just scrub er out good with some hot soapy water.

Good luck!

I miss living in the sticks. If I built a rip roaring fire in a drum, the fire department and perhaps the boys in Blue would be here, and it wouldn't be fun.........
